Liverpool completes a surprising first summer signing in a £34.5m transfer hijack, with the medical already finalized.

The Reds have outmaneuvered Newcastle to secure the signing of the highly-rated winger.

Liverpool has successfully intercepted Newcastle’s attempt to acquire Osasuna’s Victor Munoz.

The 22-year-old winger has attracted attention from numerous clubs across Europe due to his impressive performances this season. A product of both Real Madrid and Barcelona’s youth academies, he joined Osasuna in the summer of 2025 and has since recorded eight goal contributions in 34 La Liga matches.

Newcastle was the first Premier League club to pursue Munoz, who is currently representing Spain at the World Cup, but Liverpool has managed to beat them to the signing.

The Reds activated the player’s €40million (£34.6m) release clause, according to The Athletic, and dispatched club doctors to conduct his medical at Spain’s World Cup training facility in Atlanta.

He will be the inaugural signing of the Andoni Iraola era, fulfilling a crucial need in the squad. Liverpool has been eager to bolster their attacking options this transfer window following Mohamed Salah’s exit and Hugo Ekitike’s Achilles injury, which is anticipated to sideline him for approximately half of the 2026/27 season.

Osasuna is set to make a significant profit on Munoz, whom they acquired for just €5m (£4.3m) less than a year ago. Real Madrid holds a 50 percent sell-on clause, which will entitle them to €20m (£17.2m).

Osasuna is known for their direct, attacking style of play, which may align well with the approach Iraola aims to implement at Anfield.

Munoz earned only two caps for Spain before being selected for Luis de la Fuente’s World Cup squad, but he did not participate in their opening match—a goalless draw against Cape Verde.
