Newcastle United to make emotional goodbye to goalkeeper as James Trafford deal could be revived…
Newcastle United is set to bid an emotional farewell to their goalkeeper as the possibility of reviving the James Trafford deal emerges.
A reshuffle in the goalkeeping department may be imminent at St James’ Park as the summer transfer window approaches.
It is reported that Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford is keen on reviving his move to Newcastle United this summer.
The Magpies believed they had secured a £27m agreement for the former Burnley player, but Manchester City intervened at the last moment, taking advantage of a buyback clause. Trafford joined City just before Pep Guardiola pursued Gianluigi Donnarumma, a move that caught Trafford off guard.
However, a summer departure seems likely for the England international, and Newcastle will be eager to negotiate new terms. Even with the transfer window still two months away, reports from the North West suggest that it may require £40m to entice Trafford away from the Etihad Stadium.
With City showing interest in two players from Newcastle, it remains uncertain whether he could be included in a cash-plus-player deal if the Citizens solidify their offers for Sandro Tonali or Tino Livramento. Nevertheless, Newcastle could still pursue a straightforward cash deal if Nick Pope is sold this summer or if they decide against acquiring Aaron Ramsdale following his costly loan from Southampton.
Pope has not played for Newcastle since making a significant error in the home loss to Everton, and currently, the goalkeeper – whose contract runs until 2027 – is believed to be awaiting updates regarding his future.
Newcastle has already paid a £4m loan fee for Ramsdale and holds the option to purchase the former Arsenal player. If Southampton achieves promotion and Newcastle opts out of that purchase clause, Ramsdale could find himself competing for his position in the Premier League once again on the South Coast.
Regardless, Newcastle is actively seeking a new goalkeeper, as the futures of John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie remain uncertain. Both players are out of contract and may depart at the season’s conclusion.
Trafford would represent an improvement for Newcastle in the goalkeeper position, and the ambitious keeper’s salary, approximately £100,000 per week, aligns with the Magpies’ financial plan. However, there will be competition for Trafford, as Juventus has recently been linked to the Cumbrian-born talent.
When questioned about whether the intention was to be the No 2 at Man City, Trafford remarked earlier this season: “No, that wasn’t the case, but the plan didn’t unfold as expected.
“It is what it is. This is football; you must continue to work hard every day and give your all in the matches that come your way. It’s just another experience to enrich my career, and indeed, it has been a valuable learning opportunity.
“I am uncertain about what will happen next season. All I know is that I will take it one day at a time and focus on improving.”
