Virgil van Dijk’s response to Rio Ngumoha was evident after the Wolves secured a late victory against Liverpool.

Andre’s last-minute goal at Molineux was a devastating blow for Liverpool, marking yet another Premier League defeat in injury time — and Van Dijk was notably upset by this late setback at Molineux.

Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, seemed to express his anger towards Rio Ngumoha after Wolves netted a late winner on Tuesday.

Wolves triumphed 2-1 thanks to an injury-time goal from Andre, marking the fifth occasion this season that Liverpool has lost a Premier League match due to a goal scored in added time. The midfielder scored with a messy, deflected shot that followed Liverpool’s careless play from the back.

Alisson’s poor clearance was seized upon by Andre, who was unmarked and allowed to shoot from just outside the penalty area. This certainly provoked Van Dijk’s anger. The Liverpool captain appeared to direct his frustration at Ngumoha, who was near the Brazilian but failed to track back.

“You can see Virgil van Dijk’s reaction here. He is extremely angry with Ngumoha,” remarked Leon Osman during the Premier League Production commentary from Molineux, after Van Dijk made his feelings known.

“I believe the issue was not being able to get closer and apply more pressure on Andre when he initially lifted the ball and took his shot.”

In reality, it was hard to determine whether Van Dijk was directing his ire at Ngumoha or Federico Chiesa, who was also near Andre and did not track back.

Regardless, it was a heartbreaking late setback at Molineux. “Conceding goals is always frustrating,” Van Dijk told TNT Sports.

“Of course, we had just come off a couple of clean sheets [before facing West Ham]. I think we have been very solid defensively.

“But it is what it is, and we need to move on quickly because we return here in a few days, and we want to perform well in the FA Cup. We must show a response.

Despite Van Dijk’s disappointment regarding Ngumoha, Steven Gerrard has urged that the winger should be included in the starting lineup for Liverpool’s upcoming match after he made a significant offensive contribution from the bench.

“He needs to start Ngumoha now,” the former midfielder stated. “He’s achieving more in a brief period than [Cody] Gakpo does in 60 minutes.

Liverpool’s loss means they missed the opportunity to equal Manchester United and Aston Villa on points in the competition for Champions League spots.

Both teams are set to play on Wednesday, with Aston Villa facing sixth-placed Chelsea.

A victory for Chelsea would allow them to surpass Liverpool in the Premier League standings.
