Liverpool preparing to hijack Barcelona’s £90m summer move for ‘perfect player’…

Liverpool is reportedly set to intercept Barcelona’s £90 million summer pursuit of the ‘ideal player’.

The Premier League champions might find themselves in a bidding contest for a highly regarded defender to bolster their squad this summer.

Reports suggest that Liverpool and Barcelona could engage in a bidding war for a world-class defender who has made a mark at one of Europe’s top clubs.

Even after acquiring Giovanni Leoni from Serie A’s Parma in the summer of 2025 and preparing to bring in Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes next season, it seems that Arne Slot is also looking to add a more seasoned player to his roster ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.

With Virgil van Dijk likely nearing the end of his tenure with the Reds in the upcoming seasons, and Ibrahima Konate’s current deal set to expire after the 2025/26 season, there could be opportunities for new players to join Liverpool’s defense.

Liverpool academy product Jarell Quansah has been rumored to make a return to his childhood club after making a significant impact in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen since his £35 million transfer last summer.

Nevertheless, the Reds may seek to find a replacement for Konate, should he leave, in the form of a more experienced defender with a proven track record at the highest level.

As reported by CaughtOffside, Inter and Italy center-back Alessandro Bastoni has caught the attention of the Reds, while Barcelona, who view the defender as an ideal match for their style of play, and Arsenal are also interested in the 26-year-old.

Bastoni, who is under contract with the Serie A giants until June 2028, has made 291 appearances for the Nerazzurri since joining from Atalanta in 2017.

The defender has also earned 41 caps for his national team and was part of the UEFA Euro 2020-winning squad, although he only played once during the tournament.

According to CaughtOffside, Inter would entertain offers in the range of €90–100 million (£78.5–87.7 million).

Chelsea and Manchester City are also reportedly keeping an eye on the player’s situation, while Inter is eager for Bastoni to extend his contract.

Bastoni embodies the characteristics of a contemporary ball-playing defender, recognized for his exceptional passing skills, which have resulted in 30 assists since he joined Inter.

In 2024, Bastoni shared that he has looked up to Real Madrid and Germany defender Antonio Rüdiger as a model for his own game, confessing that he aims to “emulate him”.

Currently, Inter leads Serie A, holding a 10-point advantage over second-placed AC Milan.
