FA FINALLY BREAK SILENCE ON KIERAN TRIPPIER HANDBALL CONVERSATION – LIVERPOOL FANS…
The English Football League (EFL) has clarified the reasoning behind the decision not to award Liverpool a penalty during their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.
The EFL issued a statement following a contentious VAR decision.
During the match, Kieran Trippier and Luis Diaz were engaged in a tussle for the ball when it inadvertently hit Trippier’s hand.
Referee John Brooks chose not to award a penalty at that moment, and a subsequent VAR review confirmed his ruling.
Newcastle secured their victory with goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak, while Federico Chiesa netted a late consolation goal for Liverpool.
The EFL stated that Trippier was not penalized because his arm was in “an expected position” at the time of contact with the ball.
They explained, “The referee’s decision of no penalty for handball by Trippier was reviewed and upheld by VAR, as his arm was considered to be in a natural position with no evident or intentional movement towards the ball.”
Despite this, there was some debate regarding whether Liverpool should have received a penalty when the score was still 0-0.
In Europe, such a situation might have resulted in a penalty being awarded, according to some opinions.
Former Premier League referee Mike Dean, however, supported the decision made on the field.
“We aimed to score, perform well, and secure a win. We dedicated two weeks to practicing set plays specifically for this match, and if you had observed our training, you might have doubted our chances.
We were surprised when Dan Burn scored, as his training performances did not suggest he would.”
