VAR DEBATE: Was Salah’s Equalizer Offside? Liverpool Claims Injustice in Carabao Cup Final

Salah’s Equalizer Onside? Liverpool Left Disappointed in the Carabao Cup Final.

Liverpool Feels Wronged in the Carabao Cup Final.

Newcastle United triumphed over Liverpool with a score of 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final, managing to prevent Mohamed Salah from registering a single shot on goal, which has sparked concerns among fans regarding his recent performance.

In the final held on Sunday, Liverpool faced a 2-1 loss against Newcastle United, leading to criticism of star player Mohamed Salah for seemingly disappearing during the match at Wembley Stadium.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored for Newcastle, establishing a strong lead, while Federico Chiesa provided Liverpool with a glimmer of hope with a late goal from the bench.

Despite a frantic finish, Liverpool was unable to mount a comeback, allowing Newcastle to celebrate their first trophy since 1955.

Since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has solidified his status as one of the club’s all-time greats, currently ranking third on the club’s all-time scoring list.

He played a pivotal role in ending Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a Premier League title and contributed to their sixth Champions League victory, yet he was unable to deliver in a lackluster performance against Newcastle.

The Egyptian winger is having an impressive season, boasting 32 goals and 22 assists across all competitions. However, fans are growing frustrated with his unexpected record in cup finals, as he has yet to score from open play in a major final, with this streak continuing on Sunday.

“Salah ghosting in a final…” one fan remarked on social media, while others echoed concerns about his performance in crucial matches.

“Mohamed Salah and Finals. We need to discuss this,” another fan commented.

“Mo Salah! Mo Salah! Ghosting down the wing!” another fan harshly parodied his Liverpool chant.

Nevertheless, some supporters defended Salah, emphasizing that he should not bear the entire burden of the team’s success.

“We have some average forwards who have been carried this season by Mohamed Salah,” one fan stated.

“Salah may not have excelled today, but he is the reason Liverpool has achieved success in recent years,” another supporter added.

In response to the situation, Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez were brought on as substitutes, with Jones making an immediate impact by forcing goalkeeper Nick Pope to make a strong save from close range.

Newcastle quickly countered with a chance of their own, as Isak executed a volley that required Kelleher to make a crucial point-blank save following a well-placed pass from Barnes on the left.

As the match progressed into its final moments, Cody Gakpo, Harvey Elliott, and Chiesa also entered the fray.

Chiesa managed to score during stoppage time, narrowing the gap with a low shot after receiving a through ball from Elliott.

Initially, the goal was disallowed for offside, but a VAR review overturned the decision, confirming the goal was valid.

Despite their efforts, Liverpool could not find the net again in the limited time left, allowing Newcastle to secure the trophy.
