Gary Neville criticizes Arne Slot for his decisions during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final loss.
Arne Slot faces criticism from Gary Neville regarding three pivotal choices in Liverpool’s loss at the Carabao Cup final.
In the aftermath of Liverpool’s loss in the Carabao Cup final, Gary Neville has condemned Arne Slot for three crucial decisions.
Gary Neville has expressed his disapproval of Arne Slot’s choices in the second half of Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, which did not sit well with him.
According to Neville, Slot’s substitutions hindered Liverpool’s efforts to recover in the match. The team suffered a 2-1 loss at Wembley on Sunday evening, marking Newcastle’s first major domestic trophy win in 70 years.
Dan Burn scored with a header from a corner to give Newcastle a 1-0 lead at halftime, followed by Alexander Isak’s half-volley that extended their advantage.
In an attempt to ignite his team’s performance, Slot made five substitutions in the second half, despite Liverpool struggling throughout the match.
Although Federico Chiesa managed to score from a pass by Harvey Elliott in stoppage time, it was insufficient to change the outcome, especially following their recent exit from the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.
Neville, who provided commentary for Sky Sports, was critical of Slot’s tactical decisions.
The Dutch manager replaced Ibrahima Konate and Diogo Jota with Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez in the 57th minute, shifting from a four-man defense to a three-man setup.
He further intensified his gamble by substituting Cody Gakpo for Alexis Mac Allister shortly after.
This tactical adjustment allowed Newcastle to exploit spaces for counter-attacks, and the score could have easily been 3-0. “If anything, Liverpool are getting worse,” Neville remarked following the substitutions of Jones, Nunez, and Gakpo.
“The substitutes haven’t helped them. The midfield is disorganized, with gaps all over the place.”
Subsequently, Neville criticized Slot for “discarding shape” in an attempt to find a way back into the game.
In the 74th minute, Elliott and Chiesa replaced Ryan Gravenberch and Luis Diaz, and their collaboration briefly ignited hope for Liverpool after a lengthy VAR review for offside.
However, a long pass from Jarell Quansah that landed in Nick Pope’s hands drew another disparaging remark from former Manchester United defender Neville.
“That encapsulates Liverpool’s performance,” he remarked. “They have posed no real attacking threat. What has happened to them? We know they were eliminated from Europe midweek. They have truly been off their game.”
The final whistle triggered jubilant celebrations from the black and white section of Wembley, with players kneeling before rising to celebrate with their supporters.
The cameras captured club legend Alan Shearer joyfully celebrating in the stands, while Ant and Dec reveled with their family and friends.
Neville also expressed his satisfaction with the result, not concealing his delight at Isak’s pivotal goal in the second half, punctuated by his signature “ooooh.”
The former defender also mentioned that Monday would be declared a “Geordie bank holiday,” with bar owners in Tyneside planning to stay open late on Sunday.
