Neil Jones explains Liverpool’s decision to choose Arne Slot over Amorim and De Zerbi.

Liverpool is on the verge of announcing their new manager to take over from Jurgen Klopp.

With the 2023/24 season coming to a close, Liverpool fans are preparing to say goodbye to Klopp and welcome his successor.

The Reds have been diligent in their search for Klopp’s replacement, and Arne Slot seems to be the chosen one.

Before Feyenoord’s manager, there were several other names in the mix for the Liverpool job, including Xabi Alonso. However, the former Anfield icon decided to stay with Bayer Leverkusen for the 2024/25 season.

Several reports later suggested that Rúben Amorim from Sporting CP had become the top choice, however, Neil Jones has provided additional insight on the matter. In an interview with Caught Offside, the journalist disclosed the progress of Liverpool’s discussions with Slot, highlighting how the Dutchman surpassed other contenders in the process.

Jones mentioned that Arne Slot will soon be officially announced as Liverpool’s next manager, with agreements in place between the clubs and Slot himself.

Rúben Amorim was initially rumored to be a strong contender, but sources clarified that he was never a ‘preferred’ candidate.

Other potential candidates like Roberto De Zerbi, Gary O’Neil, and Unai Emery also did not progress far in discussions. Slot’s appeal lies in his successful stints at two clubs, where he managed to exceed expectations without significant financial resources.

Despite limited funds and modest player salaries, Slot was able to implement a distinct style of play and effective communication within his teams.

These qualities ultimately set him apart from other candidates, making him the chosen one in a competitive selection process.

Roberto De Zerbi, Gary O’Neil, and Unai Emery are just a few examples of other candidates who share similar qualities. However, what sets Slot apart is his ability to achieve success at two different clubs, both of which have exceeded expectations under his management.

Despite not having access to substantial funds or players with high wages, Slot has been able to establish his authority within the team by implementing a clearly-defined style of play and demonstrating impressive communication skills. These factors ultimately led to him being recognized as “the one,” even in a field that was not without its flaws.

Since joining Feyenoord in 2021, Slot has guided the team to victory in the Eredivisie title and the KNVB Cup. Additionally, his side finished as runners-up in the 2021/22 Europa Conference League.
