Liverpool may be on the verge of making an even more thrilling signing than Antoine Semenyo this January – opinion

As the January transfer window draws near, Liverpool appears to be in dire need of additional reinforcements.

The Reds should have been adequately prepared for the challenges of the season, having invested over £400m during the summer.

However, Arne Slot has struggled to integrate his new players effectively, resulting in a disjointed and at times poor start to the season for Liverpool.

As fans discuss what the squad lacks, rumors linking them to Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo continue to circulate.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool’s interest in Semenyo, and supporters are becoming increasingly excited about the possibility of the dynamic Ghanaian joining Anfield.

Yet, while Semenyo could be a valuable addition, it is debatable whether he is essential. Instead, Slot would be prudent to strengthen his midfield options when January arrives.

Following reports linking them to AZ Alkmaar prodigy Kees Smit on Sunday, it appears the Reds might be preparing to do just that.

Kees Smit represents a more enticing target than Antoine Semenyo.

As an attacking player with a knack for scoring, it is understandable that fans would be eager to see Semenyo at Anfield.

However, it is difficult to become overly enthusiastic about a player who – with all due respect – was playing for Bristol City less than three years ago.

Since then, Semenyo has made significant progress, but he is not a player who will significantly impact Liverpool.

They already possess a wealth of attacking talent, and the 25-year-old does not enhance that.

In contrast, Smit is a player who could provide a meaningful contribution to Liverpool.

The 19-year-old could offer another option in Slot’s midfield and ensure that Ryan Gravenberch has a capable backup.
