Premier League match centre offer VAR explanation on Jeremy Doku awarded penalty and Robertson controversial offside rules…
Premier League match center provides VAR clarification following Erling Haaland’s penalty miss.
The match between Manchester City and Liverpool was overshadowed by controversy after Giorgi Mamardashvili fouled Jeremy Doku, leading to a penalty being awarded to the hosts. The Premier League has now clarified this decision.
The Premier League confirmed that Jeremy Doku WAS indeed fouled, resulting in a contentious penalty for Manchester City against Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.
Doku was unceremoniously brought down by Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, during the first half. Although the penalty was not initially given, referee Chris Kavanagh reversed his decision after reviewing the incident.
A statement from the Premier League shortly after the event stated: “After review, the referee has overturned the initial decision of no penalty for Manchester City. Referee announcement: ‘After review, the goalkeeper commits a foul challenge on the attacker; the final decision is a penalty.'”
BBC pundit Danny Murphy, however, expressed skepticism regarding the decision, even after the review. He remarked: “For me, there isn’t sufficient contact from the keeper.”
Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, also voiced his discontent, sarcastically applauding Kavanagh following the ruling.
The Norwegian player had entered the match in outstanding form for Manchester City this season, having netted 18 goals in just 14 appearances across all competitions thus far.
Conversely, Mamardashvili faced scrutiny due to a mixed start at Anfield. Nevertheless, former striker Dion Dublin praised the ex-Valencia goalkeeper for his impressive save.
While speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, he commented: “That is an excellent save! The keeper really launches himself to the left and makes it look quite effortless.
“It’s a well-taken penalty that was likely heading into the side netting, but he anticipated it well. It’s probably noted on his water bottle!”
