“You can never dismiss any possibilities”: Liverpool’s summer acquisition predicted to be loaned out in January
Former Liverpool player Didi Hamann has made a surprising statement regarding Florian Wirtz’s future, indicating that the club’s record signing might be sent on loan to Real Madrid as soon as January.
Wirtz made a significant transfer to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, yet the German international has faced challenges in adjusting to life at Anfield under the new management of Arne Slot.
Florian Wirtz is anticipated to depart Liverpool in January.
Real Madrid remains interested in acquiring Wirtz, despite his slow start at Liverpool. Hamann has not dismissed the possibility of a loan transfer for the German in January.
In an interview with ESportsBets (via GOAL), Hamann remarked that the idea of a prominent player being loaned out, which once seemed unimaginable, has now become a reality in contemporary football, referencing Philippe Coutinho’s temporary transfer to Bayern Munich shortly after his significant move to Barcelona.
Hamann stated:
“In the past, top players were not loaned out. Loans were typically for those who weren’t getting playing time, but top players didn’t go on loan.
It likely began with Philippe Coutinho a few years back, when he transferred for around 140 million to Barcelona. A year later, he was loaned to Bayern Munich.
“I wouldn’t discount any possibilities in today’s football landscape. Reports suggest that Xabi Alonso has requested Real Madrid to monitor Florian Wirtz’s performances at Liverpool, which I believe could be accurate.
“We know how highly he speaks of him. He was instrumental in their league and cup victories.
He was the driving force behind the Bayer Leverkusen squad alongside Granit Xhaka, and yes, they are keeping tabs on him.
He’s too talented to fail at Liverpool, but it’s been about 10 matches now. You can never dismiss any possibilities.”
During my era, Juan Sebastian Veron arrived at Manchester United as arguably the finest midfielder available. His tenure lasted just one season.
Therefore, one should never dismiss any possibilities. The outcome will hinge on developments in the upcoming weeks. However, as I mentioned, I wouldn’t discount any options at this time, and if Real Madrid is monitoring his situation, a transfer could materialize.
Reasons Behind Florian Wirtz’s Challenges at Liverpool.
Wirtz’s initial difficulties at Liverpool can be primarily linked to the significant tactical shift from his position at Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso.
At Leverkusen, Wirtz served as the creative core of the squad — functioning as a left-sided No.10 in Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 setup, where the gameplay centered around him.
His teammates, especially Granit Xhaka, were specifically directed to locate him in the spaces between the lines.
This arrangement provided him with the high-volume possession necessary to establish rhythm, maneuver past defenders, and deliver his signature incisive passes.
Conversely, at Liverpool, Wirtz does not occupy the central role and has been assigned a different set of responsibilities.
His average touches per 90 minutes have significantly decreased, and importantly, his current role requires much more off-the-ball movement and defensive pressing.
The physical demands of the English Premier League also play a role. Wirtz has been observed being easily outmuscled and pushed off the ball during early matches in the Premier League, a frequent hurdle for technically skilled players making the transition from the Bundesliga.
Nevertheless, despite these challenges, there is no question regarding the player’s quality.
He is considered one of the top talents in his position globally, which explains why clubs like Real Madrid continue to show interest in acquiring him.
