Slot admits teams have ‘found a strategy’ to expose his side…
Slot acknowledges that teams have ‘discovered a strategy’ to take advantage of his squad.
Arne Slot stated that opponents have “discovered a strategy” to exploit the vulnerabilities in his team, admitting that they are “not competing at the top” while allowing so many goals.
The Dutch manager spoke following the 3-2 loss to Brentford, which marked the fourth consecutive defeat in the Premier League for the defending champions.
Slot provides a candid assessment of Liverpool’s defensive challenges.
Despite the attacking prowess displayed, with Mo Salah and Milos Kerkez both scoring, the Reds’ defense once again proved to be detrimental.
Brentford took an early lead from a long throw-in, exploiting one of the same weaknesses Slot had mentioned after earlier matches.
The 47-year-old did not shy away from addressing the issue, acknowledging after the match that opponents have learned how to exploit their weaknesses.
“Teams have a specific playing style against us, which is a very effective strategy, and we have yet to find a solution,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.
“Falling behind 1-0 early on doesn’t help, especially after just five minutes.
“Even on days when we don’t perform well, we can still score two goals and create additional chances, but it’s impossible to compete if we concede too many goals — and that’s not solely the defense’s fault; it involves all 11 players working together.”
This is a troubling acknowledgment, particularly since these issues have persisted over multiple matches.
While the manager’s transparency will likely be valued by fans, many will hope that this honesty is soon accompanied by a solution to the defensive problems on the field.
Injuries, adjustments, and a call for perspective.
To be fair, we have faced considerable disruption since the summer.
The injury to Diogo Jota in July created a gap not only in terms of scoring but also placed a significant emotional burden on the team.
The absence of Alisson and Ryan Gravenberch has further complicated the situation, while integrating new players like Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike was always going to require time.
“If there are significant changes during the summer, it’s not surprising that things can unfold this way,” Slot remarked. “However, I certainly didn’t anticipate four consecutive losses. That’s evident.”
The Reds’ current performance may seem concerning, yet the broader perspective indicates a team undergoing transition rather than experiencing a decline.
Amidst the criticism, there are positive indicators – particularly the end of a goal drought for Mo Salah and the ongoing impressive displays from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Even with the recent struggles, Liverpool supporters understand how swiftly circumstances can shift once this revamped squad begins to click.
With Alisson, Gravenberch, and Jeremie Frimpong all approaching a return, there remains ample reason to have faith that this team can rectify its course.
