Slot gives rare insight into why Caoimhin Kelleher had to leave Liverpool…
Slot provides valuable insight into the reasons behind Caoimhin Kelleher’s departure from Liverpool.
Arne Slot has given a candid assessment of Kelleher’s exit, acknowledging that the Irish goalkeeper made the right choice to pursue regular playing time.
In anticipation of our match against Brentford this weekend, the Dutch coach discussed the upcoming reunion with Kelleher.
Slot elaborates on Kelleher’s decision to leave Liverpool.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper transferred to Brentford this summer in a deal valued at up to £18 million, concluding a decade-long tenure at Anfield.
Kelleher’s farewell message reflected the fondness he retains for the club, expressing gratitude to staff, teammates, and fans for “helping shape me into the man I am today” and assuring that he will “always have a special place in my heart for this club and city.”
Now, Slot has provided his viewpoint on the matter, telling reporters: “Perhaps a goalkeeper is an exception, but generally, I don’t believe it’s healthy for a player to remain on the bench for over a year or miss many games in a season and then enter the next one.
“It’s incredibly challenging for them to maintain their commitment on a daily basis.
“For Caoimh, as I mentioned, goalkeepers are somewhat of an exception, but he endured this for so many years that he felt it was time to start playing – and he has proven that he was right because he is performing exceptionally well.”
This is a reasonable evaluation from our manager, who has already witnessed several squad members, including Jarell Quansah and Harvey Elliott, depart in search of consistent playing time elsewhere.
Kelleher, on the other hand, has quickly made an impact at Brentford, bringing a sense of calm and control to their team.
Injury updates as Liverpool gears up for Brentford.
Slot also addressed various fitness issues ahead of the match, indicating that Jeremie Frimpong is “not in a good place” due to a hamstring injury that will keep him sidelined for “a while.”
There are also uncertainties regarding Alexander Isak and Ryan Gravenberch, while Alisson continues to be unavailable.
“Alex is doing reasonably well. [A] question mark for the weekend, so we will see his status then. The same can be said for Ryan,” remarked the Liverpool manager.
“Alisson will not be part of the squad for tomorrow’s match. His recovery will also take a bit more time.”
The upcoming weekend match will be particularly emotional for Kelleher, who departed Anfield after making 67 appearances, achieving eight clean sheets, and winning both the League Cup and FA Cup during his tenure with us.
Slot’s remarks highlight the enduring mutual respect between the club and one of its most beloved academy graduates, even as they now find themselves on opposing teams.
