Alexander Isak and Mohamed Salah have issued an apology to Liverpool fans, stating there is ‘no excuse’ for missing clear open goals against Manchester United.
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak assert that there can be “no excuse” for squandering such significant opportunities, particularly against Manchester United.
Mohamed Salah failed to convert a prime opportunity to equalize for Liverpool during the second half of Sunday’s defeat to Manchester United, and his overall performance was disappointing.
The 30-year-old acknowledges that the team has underperformed and has let down the fans this season, suffering four consecutive defeats.
Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool places the former champions in fourth position.
Arne Slot’s team has struggled recently this season, but losing to the Red Devils at Anfield is particularly disheartening for a squad that made significant investments during the transfer window.
“I’m completely devastated. There’s absolutely no justification for this,” the Egypt international, who seldom makes public comments, expressed in a strongly-worded tweet.
“We had all the resources necessary to recover; we are still in the title race and can win it for the fans.
“We are Liverpool, and we never give up.
“I apologize, but it’s too early for an encouraging or optimistic message.
“We have let you and ourselves down.”
Arne Slot has been advised that it may be time to remove Mohamed Salah from the Liverpool lineup to help reverse the team’s decline.
The 33-year-old squandered a prime opportunity to equalize for Liverpool in the second half when he received an unmarked cross in the area but shot wide of Senne Lammens’ near post. Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor also noted that Salah and Isak have yet to demonstrate any chemistry on the field.
“Salah’s not performing. Salah and Isak currently lack any connection,” Agbonlahor remarked on talkSPORT. “Whenever Salah attempts to set him up, he’s not making the necessary runs.
“Then [Hugo] Ekitike is on the bench; should he have been substituted?”
“I believe there is an issue there; it appears that it is currently not functioning for Liverpool.”
Agbonlahor urged Slot to remove Salah from the lineup and substitute him with either Hugo Ekitike or Jeremie Frimpong.
“I feel it is the right moment to take Salah out of the lineup; one must be truthful, he is not delivering,” Agbonlahor continued. “He is not contributing much defensively, and yesterday he kept cutting inside and attempting to force passes that were not available.
“Manchester United did not leave any space behind; he kept trying a delicate pass over the top, which might work against a high defensive line.
“However, he does not resemble the player he was last season; there is no issue with taking him out of the game.
“Should Frimpong play on the right side? Should Ekitike be tasked with a role on that right side?
“Regardless of the decision, you cannot continue to field a player who is not performing.”
Liverpool’s next match is against Ekitike’s former team, Frankfurt, in the Champions League, followed by a Premier League fixture away to Brentford next weekend.
