‘Have to wait and see’ – Liverpool’s troubles escalate as Slot is left anxious over new ‘injury concern’
Liverpool’s dismal Sunday was worsened by a new ‘injury concern’ for Arne Slot, leaving him anxious about the fitness of a key player.
The October international break failed to provide any relief for the Reds, who suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, with yesterday’s match being the most humiliating as Manchester United triumphed at Anfield for the first time in nearly ten years.
While the away team celebrated jubilantly in their dressing room afterwards, the home side was left lamenting missed opportunities and the misfortune of hitting the woodwork, and they may also have to add another name to their injury list.
Liverpool faces a new injury concern regarding Ryan Gravenberch.
After the match, Arne Slot revealed that he substituted Ryan Gravenberch shortly after the hour mark due to a knock, with the midfielder facing a tight timeline to recover ahead of the Champions League match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.
The Liverpool head coach stated (via liverpoolfc.com): “I took him off because he twisted his ankle.
Is he an injury concern? That’s what we have to wait and see tomorrow, but we have to play in two days again because we have to play three games in seven days, just like we had to do after the last international break.
“There isn’t much time for players to recuperate, but the positive is that we have more than one capable midfielder.”
Gravenberch’s injury concern adds to Liverpool’s woes.
Gravenberch was also substituted with a suspected injury concern during international duty a week ago, but that was merely precautionary.
Although Liverpool’s injury list is not excessively long at the moment, the last thing they need while struggling is for a player as vital as the 23-year-old to be unavailable during a challenging stretch of fixtures, especially as the urgency for a turnaround in form intensifies with each defeat.
The Dutchman had been one of our standout players on Sunday prior to his substitution, delivering some precise progressive passes and positioning himself well while successfully winning three tackles and five out of six duels (Sofascore).
Slot has correctly pointed out that the Reds possess other capable midfield alternatives ready to step in if necessary, and Curtis Jones performed admirably after coming off the bench yesterday.
Nevertheless, the potential loss of someone as pivotal as Gravenberch during such a challenging period for the Premier League champions adds to the existing distress at Anfield, and we can only wish for positive news regarding our number 38 before yet another demanding fixture in midweek.
