Liverpool Initiates Discussions to Acquire Bundesliga Star – Report.
Liverpool Investigates Nico Schlotterbeck Transfer as Guehi Interest Slows
Liverpool is reportedly in negotiations to sign a Bundesliga star, as they look to intensify their interest in the Borussia Dortmund standout
TEAMtalk reports that “Liverpool have engaged in initial and ‘positive’ discussions regarding the acquisition of a Borussia Dortmund player, indicating that a second deal is likely NOT in the works.”
This player is 25-year-old Nico Schlotterbeck, a left-footed international from Germany who has been included in three of the last four Bundesliga Teams of the Season and has earned 22 caps over the past four years.
Liverpool’s summer transfer window was praised as nearly perfect. The signings of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak both broke the British transfer record, significantly enhancing the core of Arne Slot’s team.
The only disappointment was the inability to finalize a deal for Marc Guehi on deadline day.
Giovanni Leoni’s ACL injury has intensified the focus on that position. Guehi remains a valued target, and with his contract at Crystal Palace set to expire next summer, Liverpool still aims to acquire him on a free transfer.
However, TEAMtalk notes that Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Real Madrid have all entered the fray, with Bayern already initiating discussions with his representatives.
Schlotterbeck Discussions Indicate Strategic Change.
Liverpool is not adopting a passive stance. As TEAMtalk highlights, they have also expressed interest in Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano while commencing early conversations with Schlotterbeck’s agents about a potential move in 2026.
These discussions are characterized as “positive,” indicating a genuine pursuit rather than mere speculative scouting.
This strategy stands in stark contrast to how the club managed the Isak situation. TEAMtalk recalls Fabrizio Romano’s assertion that Liverpool “resisted the urge to engage in talks with alternative strikers,” believing Isak was the ideal choice.
Had that deal fallen through, the club would not have signed anyone, already having Hugo Ekitike as a backup.
Liverpool’s approach has changed with Guehi. According to TEAMtalk, “in Guehi’s case, Liverpool are already making noise around both Upamecano and now Schlotterbeck.”
The implication is evident. Liverpool desires Guehi, but they are not prepared to wait if his representatives consider competing offers.
TEAMtalk emphasizes that “it’s important to stress Guehi remains Liverpool’s favoured option at centre-back.” Nevertheless, should Ibrahima Konate leave upon the expiration of his contract, the need for two central defenders may arise.
Slot and the recruitment team seem to be gearing up for this eventuality. Schlotterbeck brings a unique skill set: a left-footed ball player who is comfortable in possession and excels in aerial challenges.
Although interest is still in the early stages, the tone of TEAMtalk’s coverage suggests a sincere interest rather than mere curiosity. Liverpool’s management may be subtly indicating to Guehi’s camp that indecision will not be accepted.
Our Perspective – EPL Index Analysis
For Liverpool, this appears to be a strategic move rather than a reactionary one. Guehi remains the preferred choice for many fans. He is proven in the Premier League, mature for his age, and tactically versatile.
However, Liverpool has previously faced setbacks by waiting on players who are already attracting attention from wealthier clubs. Schalke, Fulham, and now Guehi’s camp have all demonstrated how prolonged negotiations can leave the club vulnerable.
On the other hand, Schlotterbeck is certainly not a lesser option. His performances with Borussia Dortmund indicate he could thrive in a more advanced defensive setup, and his left-footed nature finally adds balance to a defense that has historically leaned towards right-sided players.
Some supporters may justifiably question whether Liverpool should pursue both players.
With Konate’s contract still unresolved and Leoni’s injury creating uncertainty regarding long-term squad depth, this may not be an unreasonable proposition.
The positive takeaway is that the club is taking initiative. No longer will they wait for the ideal circumstances. If Guehi hesitates, Liverpool will act.
