Liverpool is Competing to Acquire £30m Defender This Summer – Report
Liverpool is at the forefront of the competition for Parma’s Emerging Talent Giovanni Leoni
According to a report from Sport Witness, referencing Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool has positioned itself as one of the most vigilant clubs in the pursuit of teenage center-back Giovanni Leoni.
The Reds are contending with Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and now West Ham United in what is becoming an increasingly fierce chase for the Parma defender.
The 18-year-old has been identified as one of the most promising young defenders in Italian football, and Liverpool’s involvement highlights the seriousness with which the Merseyside club is approaching the development of long-term defensive strength under Arne Slot.
Parma’s €35m Valuation Remains Firm
Parma is steadfast in their €35 million asking price for Leoni, which not only reflects the player’s potential but also the rising demand for elite young center-backs throughout Europe.
Despite the substantial fee, Liverpool’s interest seems authentic, particularly as the club’s recruitment strategy increasingly favors young, technically skilled players.
“Inter have ‘reserved’ the center-back,” reports Corriere dello Sport, but they also mention that the Serie A giants must await funding from player sales, especially concerning Ademola Lookman, before they can proceed with a definitive offer.
This delay is proving critical, with Sport Witness emphasizing that “Leoni is becoming impatient,” and the report presents the interest from Liverpool and others as a “warning” to Inter.
Inter Milan’s Delay Could Be Detrimental
The urgency is evident. Leoni is eager for a transfer to Inter Milan, but the longer they hesitate, the more likely it is that he could find opportunities elsewhere.
With Cristian Chivu’s team managing financial considerations, the teenager’s future now rests with those who are prepared to act swiftly.
Sport Witness reports, “the prospect of a transfer to other clubs is being strongly suggested, particularly if Inter delays too long.” This supports the idea that Parma is willing to sell outside of Italy if the offer is right and the buyer is prepared to act immediately, rather than later.
English Clubs Show Interest, But Liverpool’s Interest Stands Out
Tottenham and Newcastle United have also shown interest, although there is little information on how far along their efforts are. West Ham’s involvement in the situation, as reported by Corriere dello Sport, appears to be more tactical than substantial — potentially an agent-driven initiative to accelerate discussions with Inter.
Nevertheless, Liverpool’s interest seems more intentional. With a need for long-term succession planning behind Virgil van Dijk, Leoni could be developed during the Slot era as a future defensive leader. He aligns with the club’s profile: smart with the ball, calm under pressure, and possessing the physical qualities to succeed in the Premier League.
Market Conditions Favor Proactive Clubs
Leoni’s eagerness and Inter’s reluctance have opened a brief window of opportunity.
It remains uncertain whether Liverpool is genuinely prepared to meet Parma’s €35 million asking price, but if they are, the transaction could occur swiftly.
For the time being, the buzz surrounding other English clubs may simply be that — buzz — unless one of them, including Liverpool, converts interest into an offer.
This seems like the type of move Liverpool should not delay on.
Giovanni Leoni may not yet be a well-known figure on Merseyside, but his path mirrors the kind of signing Liverpool has successfully executed in the past.
Arne Slot’s inaugural season was remarkable and championship-winning, but adaptation is crucial. With the exits of Quansah and the unavoidable need to manage playing time over a lengthy season, having a player like Leoni in the squad could provide immediate rotational support and long-term structural stability.
Indeed, a fee of €35 million is substantial for an 18-year-old, yet the market dynamics have evolved. Exceptional talent commands a premium, and Liverpool has previously demonstrated their readiness to invest when scouting evaluations support the decision.
If Leoni is truly dissatisfied with Inter’s slow progress and is considering a move to the Premier League, Liverpool must take action.
The club cannot afford to be passive, particularly with Tottenham, Newcastle, and other competitors in the mix. Moreover, while West Ham’s interest might be more talk than action, Spurs possess significant financial resources and Newcastle is driven by ambition.
Leoni donning the red jersey could play a crucial role in Liverpool’s defensive overhaul and send a strong early signal that Arne Slot’s second season will continue to be as progressive as the first.
