Rúben Neves was targeted with insensitive chants about his late friend Diogo Jota by Al-Taawoun fans during an Al-Hilal match

The Match Incident
The Game: Al-Hilal played away against Al-Taawoun on September 12 2026, winning the match 6-0.
The Taunt: Home supporters chanted “Jota” repeatedly to taunt Neves during the game.
The Friendship: Neves and Jota were extremely close friends and former teammates at Wolverhampton Wanderers and for the Portugal national team.
Neves was a pallbearer at Jota’s funeral after Jota died tragically in a car crash in July 2025. Neves also wears the number 21 shirt for Portugal in honor of Jota.
The Reaction: Neves sarcastically applauded the crowd and pointed to the sky, gesturing that “God is watching”. After the match, he expressed his disgust with the fans’ behavior.
Fallout and Investigation
Ronaldo’s Call: Cristiano Ronaldo spoke out on social media and demanded lifetime stadium bans for the fans involved, stating that such behavior has no place in football.
Official Response: The Saudi Arabia FA announced a formal investigation into the fans’ actions during the match.
