Unveiled: Florian Wirtz ‘Anticipated’ to Choose this Liverpool Shirt Number

Florian Wirtz’s potential shirt number at Liverpool – disclosed

Florian Wirtz has a clear shirt number preference following his frustrated reaction to Liverpool rumors.

Florian Wirtz is poised to join Liverpool after the Reds reached a club record agreement with Bayer Leverkusen, but he will not don the same number he wore in the Bundesliga.

As Liverpool nears the acquisition of Florian Wirtz, some supporters may shift their focus to the star’s likely squad number.

Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen have settled on a fee for the player that could escalate to a British record of £116m if certain add-ons are fulfilled, although there are still a few details to finalize before the signing is officially confirmed.

Wirtz has sported the number 10 jersey for Leverkusen over the past two seasons, including their title-winning campaign in 2023-24.

However, that number is unavailable at Anfield, as first-team regular Alexis Mac Allister has claimed it as his own.

“Who says I want the 10? I respect players,” Wirtz stated on Instagram earlier this month. “Don’t believe everything that’s written.”

Wirtz has only worn one other number throughout his senior club career, although he donned 17 for Germany during Euro 2024.

He initially wore 27 on his shirt for his Leverkusen debut, and coincidentally, that number is currently unoccupied at Anfield.

Darwin Nunez wore 27 in his inaugural season with Liverpool but switched to 9 after Roberto Firmino departed the club. Nunez’s former number remains available, suggesting Wirtz could revert to the number he wore as a youth.

Only a select few players have donned 27 for Liverpool in the Premier League era, but the club includes a cult hero among them.

Divock Origi held the number 27 throughout his tenure at the club, notably during the 2018-19 season when he scored in both the Champions League semifinals and final.

Full-backs Gregory Vignal and Philipp Degen are among those who have worn the number in the past.

Vignal sported 27 on his jersey during the 2000-01 season when Liverpool achieved a cup treble, although the Frenchman did not step onto the field in any of the three finals.

Wirtz is poised to become the third senior player to join Arne Slot’s team this summer.

His former Bayer Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong will take over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s position after the Reds activated his release clause of just under £30 million, while Giorgi Mamardashvili has been acquired for a similar fee from Valencia.

“It was quite straightforward,” Frimpong shared with the club’s media while reflecting on his choice to join Anfield.

“Liverpool expressed their interest, and for me, it was an obvious decision. I thought, ‘Whatever it takes, just make it happen,’ [addressing] my agents: ‘Just make it happen.’

“To the Liverpool fans, I promise to give my all, my energy, and my work ethic. Together, I hope we can achieve victories, celebrate together, and accomplish everything as a team. I am thrilled to be here.

Thank you all for welcoming me; I will not disappoint you, and I will provide the energy you desire.”
