Report : Richard Hughes working on major Liverpool summer signing as Fabrizio Romano names target…

Richard Hughes is concentrating on a crucial summer signing for Liverpool, with Fabrizio Romano disclosing the target.
Richard Hughes is actively pursuing a significant summer signing for Liverpool, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, who has identified a target.
Romano has stated that Liverpool is making substantial progress in their efforts to enhance their squad, with sporting director Richard Hughes diligently working on a key summer acquisition.
This comes amid growing interest in a prominent player from Bournemouth.
Under the leadership of Arne Slot, Liverpool has positioned itself for an exceptional first season, currently holding an 11-point advantage at the top of the Premier League, reaching the Carabao Cup final, and emerging as favorites in the Champions League after winning seven of their eight group matches.
However, a challenging last-16 matchup against the formidable Paris Saint-Germain looms ahead.
The team’s achievements this season are particularly impressive given that Slot has refrained from making significant additions to the squad, aside from the signing of Italy winger Federico Chiesa for £12.5 million.
With financial resources available and uncertainties surrounding several key players, including Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk—who all have contracts expiring on July 1—Liverpool is preparing for what could be a historic summer, with reports indicating that Slot will have a £200 million budget to work with.
Recent reports suggest that concerns regarding Van Dijk may prompt Liverpool to intensify their pursuit of a new central defender, with Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen emerging as a strong candidate within the club’s decision-making circles.
Romano has reiterated that the Spain Under-21 defender is a primary target, and Liverpool’s deliberations regarding a new center-back are gaining momentum.
“I can confirm once again that Liverpool is making significant strides in identifying the center-back they wish to sign this summer,” Romano shared on his YouTube channel. “Liverpool is set to pursue an important center-back.”
During an internal meeting involving Richard Hughes, board members, and Arne Slot, there was a consensus on the necessity of acquiring a significant centre-back during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Romano elaborates, stating that “significant” could refer to either a promising young talent or an established player. He notes that Liverpool is inclined to invest in young players for both immediate impact and future potential.
The situation regarding Dean Huijsen is noteworthy, as Liverpool, along with Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Newcastle, are all interested in securing his services. The competition for his signature is expected to be intense.
Liverpool is also exploring other options and is actively engaged in identifying the ideal centre-back to target.
Romano’s insights on Huijsen align with previous reports from transfer insider Fraser Fletcher, who also identified the 6ft 5in defender as a confirmed target for Liverpool.
According to our sources, Liverpool’s chances of finalizing a deal are bolstered by the presence of an exit clause in Huijsen’s contract with Bournemouth, which could allow the Reds to acquire him after just one season.
Bournemouth is understandably keen to offer Huijsen a new contract to reward his impressive performances this season, which have positioned the club for a potential European competition spot next year.
However, any new contract would likely result in a significant increase in his buy-out clause.
Regarding new signings, Slot has acknowledged that preparations for the summer transfer window are already in progress, although he has not specified which positions the team aims to strengthen.
We are thoroughly evaluating every position within the team. As I have mentioned previously, last summer we were somewhat restrained in our activities because Richard, myself, and the rest of the team wanted to observe how the players were adapting to my coaching style, Slot stated during a press conference last week.
At this point, we have gained a solid understanding of our squad. While I won’t disclose our preferred positions, it is evident that we have analyzed the team and identified areas for improvement, which will guide our efforts this summer.
In the latest Liverpool transfer news, there is interest in Norwegian talent Sverre Nypan, as reports indicate that the club is attempting to persuade him to choose them over Arsenal.
Additionally, Liverpool is anticipated to bolster their attacking options this summer, particularly with increasing speculation surrounding Darwin Nunez’s potential departure if a suitable offer arises.
One player that Slot and his team are particularly interested in is Alexander Isak. Although securing a deal for him would be challenging and could set a new British transfer record, many Liverpool supporters are urging FSG to invest in a striker who would be a perfect match for their system.
Furthermore, acquiring a new right-back may be a priority, especially if Alexander-Arnold completes a transfer to Real Madrid.
Several players have been linked to Anfield, but recent reports from Brazil suggest that a 21-year-old star from Flamengo has emerged as the top target, with details regarding the potential cost of the deal also coming to light.
