Report: Arsenal has recently submitted a bid to acquire ‘the best striker in Europe’ within the last few hours.

Andrea Berta has initiated his first official action to address Arsenal’s striker dilemma.

The Gunners are in urgent need of a prolific number nine more than any other player this summer, and efforts have been underway behind the scenes for quite some time now.

Mikel Arteta’s team has been associated with various names over the past few weeks, but no formal bid had been made by Arsenal until now.

If the report is accurate, that situation has now changed.

Arsenal has presented their initial formal offer to sign Viktor Gyokeres.

Viktor Gyokeres has been linked with potential transfers to numerous clubs in the Premier League.

The striker has been a standout performer since his transfer to Sporting CP from Coventry City in the summer of 2023. He has emerged as one of the most prolific strikers globally since his move to Portugal.

Arsenal has been monitoring Gyokeres for some time, and their interest in the Swedish striker solidified following Berta’s appointment as the sporting director.

After weeks of speculation, Mais Futebol in Portugal has disclosed that Arsenal has made a formal offer to sign Gyokeres ‘in recent hours’.

The report indicates that the North London club has proposed a ‘lump sum’ offer of under €60 million (£51.2m) for the striker, with potential bonuses increasing that total.

However, the challenge for Andrea Berta is that Sporting is not satisfied with the offer and is requesting approximately €80 million (£68.2m) to allow their star player to depart.

Despite the unsuccessful bid, the report suggests that discussions are anticipated to persist between Arsenal and Sporting in the upcoming days.

What can Viktor Gyokeres contribute to Arsenal?

The straightforward answer is goals.

Gyokeres, praised as ‘the best striker in Europe’ by Sporting manager Rui Borges (Metro), has netted nearly 100 goals for Sporting over the past two seasons. This remarkable tally is why Berta is reportedly a strong admirer of him.

Indeed, the Portuguese top division is considerably less competitive than the Premier League; however, Gyokeres has also showcased his talent in the Champions League, notably scoring a hat-trick against Manchester City.

While there is no assurance that Gyokeres will thrive at Arsenal if they choose to acquire him, it is important not to overlook his statistics simply due to his current league.

Bringing him on board certainly poses a risk, but we believe it is a risk that Arsenal should be willing to embrace.
