Mourinho Pushes Real Madrid to Chase Van Dijk as AC Milan Stay Alert

Virgil van Dijk has become a target for two European heavyweights as questions grow around his long-term future at Anfield. Reports suggest both Spanish and Italian giants are monitoring his situation closely ahead of the January window.

According to a report from Fichajes, Jose Mourinho is weighing a move for the Liverpool captain as Real Madrid assess their defensive options before January. The 35-year-old remains under contract at Anfield until June 2027, though uncertainty over an extension could open a window for the Spanish club to act.

The story runs alongside renewed interest from AC Milan, with Football Italia citing journalist Carlo Pellegatti’s continued belief that van Dijk could eventually land at San Siro.

Mourinho Sees Experience as a Fix

Real Madrid already carry depth at centre-back, with Antonio Rudiger, Dean Huijsen, and Ibrahima Konate all part of the current setup. Mourinho still appears keen to bring in more experience. Defensive lapses early in the campaign have reportedly pushed the Portuguese coach to examine alternatives, particularly after lapses in concentration and errors during build-up play.

Rudiger has entered the final year of his deal. Van Dijk would represent a different profile compared to the younger defenders in the squad. His positioning, aerial strength, and ability to organise a backline could give Mourinho another leader on the pitch.

Liverpool currently hold van Dijk under contract until 2027, though talks over a new deal have stalled. If that stalemate continues, January could turn into a defining moment for his future at the club.

AC Milan Refuse to Walk Away

Milan’s interest carries a longer history. Football Italia reports that Pellegatti still believes van Dijk could arrive at San Siro, having previously suggested the Dutchman was open to a move to the Rossoneri.

His contract status sits at the center of the speculation. A January exit would require Liverpool’s agreement to a transfer, while waiting until summer could allow van Dijk to leave as a free agent if no fresh terms are reached.

A move to Real Madrid would be fascinating on paper, but the logic hinges on what Mourinho actually wants from his back line. Van Dijk is no longer the explosive centre-back who dominated Premier League attacks years ago. His reading of the game, passing range, and leadership remain valuable traits.

In a Mourinho side, those qualities could matter. The manager has always placed heavy weight on defensive structure and experienced decision-makers on the pitch.

A Question of Value and Timing

The bigger issue is whether Real Madrid should commit serious money to a 35-year-old when younger options already sit in the squad. Milan offers a different equation, especially if van Dijk reaches free agency next summer.

For Liverpool, the call may come down to a simple trade-off: does his experience outweigh the need to start planning for the next era of the defense? Stay with TipsGG for updates as this transfer saga develops.
