Liverpool lining up late move to sign £50m Premier League star, he’s way better than Jones…
Liverpool is preparing a late bid to acquire a £50m Premier League star, who is significantly superior to Jones.
On Sunday, Liverpool will face Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in a Premier League opener that will help the Reds gauge their readiness for the Andoni Iraola era.
Iraola, 44, took over from Arne Slot this summer following a disappointing year on Merseyside. His aggressive, ‘vertical’ style of play aligns more closely with the strategy that fans have cherished during nearly a decade under Jurgen Klopp. However, he still requires several new players, particularly in the attacking department.
Paris Saint-Germain forwards Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye are both being considered. FSG is hopeful that both transfers can be finalized before the transfer window closes, especially with Mohamed Salah’s departure to Trabzonspor and Cody Gakpo’s impending transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, which is certainly necessary.
Nevertheless, there are other potential departures for Iraola and his team to contemplate, as Curtis Jones’ transfer to Inter Milan is nearing completion.
Reasons for Liverpool’s decision to sell Curtis Jones
Jones has been a consistent presence in the broader Liverpool squad over the years, yet he has struggled to establish himself as a key player for the club. He appears to be disillusioned with his position at his childhood club and is keen to pursue the move to Inter Milan, which has turned into a lengthy summer saga.
Since January, Jones has been the primary target for the Scudetto-winning side, but negotiations continue regarding Liverpool’s £35m asking price for their midfielder, who is technically skilled, athletic, and progressive with the ball. He could excel in Italian football.
The harsh reality is that Jones will not receive the playing time he seeks in the Premier League, at least not with Liverpool. There are too many players ahead of him in the hierarchy, and his poor pre-season performance has likely hindered the six-time England international’s prospects.
Especially with a rising talent like Trey Nyoni taking center stage and asserting his position for a prominent role in the upcoming year. FSG and Iraola may believe that Jones can be let go without needing a costly replacement, given the potential that Nyoni possesses.
Nonetheless, fans might contend that the Anfield team still requires additional depth in the central midfield.
Liverpool is considering a late-window acquisition for a Jones replacement. Nyoni has the capability to evolve into a superstar, but Liverpool will likely be cautious not to overwhelm their emerging midfield star too soon. He only made six appearances in the Premier League last season, without starting any of those matches. An external option may be necessary.
According to journalist Dylan McBennett, Liverpool has joined their rivals Manchester United in preparing a late-stage bid to acquire Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams, with summer reports indicating that the Premier League club will seek £50m for the USMNT international.
While Adams may not possess the same tactical finesse as Jones, he offers a high-energy, defensively robust playing style that could benefit a Liverpool squad that struggled with physicality last season.
Jones was competent in duels, winning 51% of his attempts in the Premier League, but most of his contributions were in advanced midfield roles. With Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai poised to excel in those areas this year, Jones may find himself somewhat unnecessary.
In contrast, Adams presents a profile that Liverpool might currently lack. Ryan Gravenberch is graceful and adept at resisting pressure, but he does not serve as a strong midfield anchor at No. 6. Additionally, there are concerns regarding Alexis Mac Allister’s decline, even though he has been given a significant role at the beginning of the Iraola era.
Adams participated in only 21 top-flight matches under Iraola’s guidance last season due to injury, but he gradually adapted to his position and demonstrated the defensive skills that the Reds lacked the previous year. He recorded an average of 11.80 defensive contributions per game, placing him in the top 22% of midfielders for this statistic.
Liverpool struggled under Slot’s leadership last season, managing to secure a fifth-place finish, which allowed them to qualify for the Champions League through the new UEFA coefficient rankings.
In an alternate scenario, Iraola’s Bournemouth could have overtaken Liverpool for the spot. If Adams had been fit for a larger portion of the season, he might have made a significant impact. Iraola holds him in high regard, and now he has the opportunity to bring him to Anfield.
