Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal is actively pursuing a talented winger, with Mikel Arteta expressing strong admiration for the player.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal is looking to acquire a winger known for his impressive skills, whom Arteta holds in high esteem.
Following a January transfer window where the club did not secure any new signings, Arsenal is now focusing on enhancing their attacking options for the upcoming summer transfer period.
Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams is a key target, as he is regarded highly by the Gunners.
Despite not needing reinforcements in defense or midfield, Arsenal’s recent injury woes affecting Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, and Kai Havertz have put pressure on their attacking lineup.
This situation may prompt the club to seek significant additions during the summer transfer window, with Williams being a prominent candidate.
Romano notes that Williams has been performing exceptionally well for Bilbao and has garnered attention from several top clubs, including Barcelona and Liverpool, following his impressive displays, particularly during the EURO 2024 tournament.
While Arteta and the recruitment team at Arsenal hold Williams in high regard, the competition for his signature may complicate any potential deal.
Romano highlighted in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter that it is still early in the process, with multiple clubs interested in the winger.
Arsenal have previously been linked with a move for the winger, but due to injuries sustained by Havertz and Jesus this season, the club is now prioritizing the enhancement of their attacking options.
Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko have emerged as primary targets, which may postpone any potential acquisition of Williams as they concentrate on securing a new key player to drive their ambitions forward.
Williams’ Current Season Could Provide Arsenal with Valuable Insights
Bilbao are unexpected challengers for the La Liga title.
Since his debut nearly four years ago, Williams has made a significant impact at Bilbao, accumulating 24 goals and 31 assists across 152 matches in all competitions. Notably, 34 of these contributions occurred in La Liga, earning him the label of ‘frightening’ from BBC’s John Bennett.
His impressive performances led to his debut for Spain in September 2022. While his statistics this season may not be outstanding, he has played a crucial role in the team’s success, with only three league losses in 23 matches.
As slight outsiders for the La Liga title, the pressure Williams faces in the season’s final stretch could serve as a valuable test of his ability to manage high-stakes situations, should he join the Gunners in the future.
Competing with Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard for positions on the flanks would enable Arsenal to challenge on multiple fronts, aiming for a successful campaign in either the Premier League or Champions League.
