Fabrizio Romano: Mikel Arteta is actively advocating for Arsenal’s pursuit of a ‘world-class’ star.

Arsenal is poised to enhance their midfield this summer to strengthen their title-winning squad, with Mikel Arteta having pinpointed a key target he desires.

The Gunners secured their first Premier League title in 22 years, finishing seven points ahead of Manchester City, and also reached the finals of the Champions League and Carabao Cup, where they faced defeats against City and Paris Saint-Germain.

Now, Arteta aims to elevate his team to new heights, with Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes emerging as his top choice for the Emirates Stadium.

Romano: Arteta Advocating for Guimaraes Transfer

Guimaraes, labeled as ‘world-class’, has been the subject of significant transfer speculation away from the Magpies this summer, and he is currently excelling with Brazil at the World Cup, contributing four assists to propel them into the Last 16 of the tournament.

Arsenal previously had an initial offer of approximately £55m turned down by Newcastle for the Brazilian talent, and reports indicate that the north London club is preparing a revised £60m bid to entice them into a sale.

However, in his latest YouTube video, reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano disclosed that Arteta is the key proponent behind the deal, although he anticipates that finalizing it will be quite challenging.

Bruno Guimarães Transfer Discussions Impact Newcastle Significantly

“Clearly, Newcastle has sold Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, so they currently have no intention of allowing Bruno Guimarães to leave,” he stated.

“Simultaneously, Arsenal’s £55m offer was rejected. Mikel Arteta is a strong admirer of the player, and I can confirm that he genuinely values him. Mikel Arteta has been the one driving this interest in Bruno Guimaraes from within the club.

“This isn’t the first occasion Arsenal has pursued him. In the past, they have also contemplated the option of acquiring Bruno Guimaraes, who has consistently been valued by Arteta. However, with Newcastle’s current stance, securing him will be quite challenging, as Newcastle has profited from both Gordon and Tonali, and they have communicated to Guimaraes and his associates that they intend to retain him. Therefore, it will be far from straightforward for Arsenal to finalize this deal.”

Guimaraes Joining Arsenal Would Transform the Team

During the 2025/26 season, Arsenal’s midfield, featuring Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice, was heavily utilized by Arteta, leading him to resort to Myles Lewis-Skelly in critical moments.

Christian Norgaard and Mikel Merino also offered additional options throughout the season, but bringing in a new elite midfield talent would significantly impact the Gunners and elevate their performance to new heights.

Newcastle, of course, is reluctant to part with another key player, yet in today’s football landscape, financial power is paramount, and Arsenal possesses the means to secure a deal if they present a sufficiently substantial offer.
