Farewell to Howe: Newcastle is already preparing to appoint a “genius” Iraola or Mourinho as their next manager
Regrettably, Eddie Howe’s struggles have intensified at Newcastle United, and it increasingly appears that the title-winning manager is on his way out this summer.
Another defeat in the Premier League. Another instance of United’s decline since winning the Carabao Cup last season and earning a spot in the Champions League. Bournemouth deserved their three points, marking Howe’s eighth loss in 11 Premier League matches, prompting his superiors to reassess his position.
It is evident that Newcastle’s season has come to an end. Fortunately, the Magpies are not in danger of relegation, but there is little doubt about the lack of a late-season push for Europe for the 14th-placed team, which would need to embark on a confident winning streak to recover from this deficit.
It feels terrible to suggest that Howe should be dismissed, but the situation is dire, and this sentiment is likely echoed by many fans in Tyneside.
Newcastle is already preparing for Howe’s successor
If PIF chooses to take decisive action and relieve Howe of his duties this summer, they will have a variety of options to consider. At the very least, the managerial market is quite competitive.
Among the top candidates is outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, who has made a significant impact over the last three seasons on the south coast. The Spaniard is in high demand, but whether he would be an improvement over Howe, who has brought trophies back to St. James’ Park, remains to be seen.
Benfica’s Jose Mourinho is also being considered, although some might argue that the Portuguese icon’s coaching career is on the decline, with his pragmatic approach not aligning with what fans would prefer to see.
Nevertheless, Newcastle could find a gem by hiring Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, whose contract at Selhurst Park is set to expire this summer, as confirmed by Football Insider, which states he has been included in PIF’s shortlist.
Glasner will attract numerous potential employers when he concludes his successful tenure at Palace, yet no clear frontrunner has surfaced, leaving an opportunity for the Magpies to make their move.
Reasons why Glasner might be the ideal replacement for Howe
At 53, Glasner has established himself as an exceptional Premier League manager, transforming Crystal Palace into a stylish and cohesive team, clinching the FA Cup and the Community Shield in 2025.
Former Palace player John Salako has dubbed him a “genius,” and Glasner’s unyielding drive for success has elevated his Premier League experience to new levels. Newcastle could benefit from this, and considering his previous Europa League victory with Eintracht Frankfurt, it is evident that his success is not merely a fleeting moment but indicative of a broader quality suited for an elite environment.
Howe has demonstrated similar attributes, but his project appears to have stagnated, and a refresh might be the most beneficial course for all involved.
His flexibility, alternating between a three-man defense and a more conventional backline, could integrate well with this dynamic United squad, and his impressive market record is something the club requires after last year’s transfer window fell short of expectations.
Howe has received considerable acclaim for transforming the mentality at Newcastle. Specifically, he has fostered a winning mindset, with his focus on competing in cup tournaments yielding positive results last year.
In this regard, Glasner aligns with his football philosophy, and while the same can certainly be said for Mourinho, Glasner possesses a more contemporary tactical approach that would support the advancement of the Magpies’ project.
On the other hand, Iraola would not be a poor choice, but he has yet to demonstrate his capabilities at the highest level or in European competitions. Glasner is currently pursuing the Conference League title.
Howe has secured his legacy at Newcastle. He will always be recognized as a pivotal figure at the beginning of something extraordinary for the Toon.
Nevertheless, a transition is necessary, and Glasner might be the ideal manager to take charge.
