Ian Wright was taken aback by Gary Neville’s prediction regarding the Liverpool versus Southampton match.

Ian Wright was left speechless by Gary Neville’s prediction for the Liverpool and Southampton match.

Predicting match outcomes can often feel like a risky endeavor, especially in the fiercely competitive environment of the Premier League.

Liverpool is preparing to face Southampton this Sunday as they resume competitive play, having entered the November international break at the top of the league standings.

The team from Merseyside currently holds a five-point lead over reigning champions Manchester City and a nine-point advantage over Arsenal.

Gary Neville has had a change of heart regarding Liverpool’s prospects.

Initially, Neville suggested a 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Southampton, a prediction that seemed particularly audacious given the circumstances.

As expected, this bold claim drew disbelief from his co-hosts on The Overlap.

“We’ll go 1-1,” Neville stated, with Paul Scholes agreeing.

“Really? Wait a minute. Liverpool is at the top – are you out of your mind? Why am I even discussing this with you? Good grief,” Ian Wright responded, challenging the prediction.

The two then revised their forecast to a 2-1 victory for Liverpool on the South Coast.

Perhaps Wright is still processing the findings from Opta’s title probability calculator, which currently gives Liverpool the highest likelihood of winning the championship at the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.

As for Southampton, there is no doubt that Russell Martin’s squad will be eager to secure points in gameweek 12, having managed only one win and a draw from their previous 11 league matches.

While it is acknowledged that performances following international breaks can be inconsistent, it seems overly optimistic for rivals to anticipate a repeat of the slip-up that allowed Nottingham Forest to hand Liverpool their only defeat this season.

The return of key players from injury, such as Harvey Elliott, is likely to boost our confidence. Additionally, it appears that Alisson Becker is nearing a complete return to team training and, ultimately, to the pitch at Anfield.

Nonetheless, the upcoming match against Southampton might be too soon for our Brazilian goalkeeper.

Predicted scoreline: Southampton 0 – 2 Liverpool

Predicted XI: Kelleher, Robertson, Van Dijk, Konate, Alexander-Arnold, Gravenberch, Jones, Szoboszlai, Gakpo, Diaz, Salah.
