Liverpool has been advised to pursue a player from Newcastle United as a potential replacement for their aging star.
Liverpool is encouraged to consider signing a player from Newcastle United to take the place of their older star.
It has been suggested that Liverpool should pursue a Newcastle United player to fill the role of their veteran star.
Is Liverpool eyeing a move for a Newcastle United player?
This is the suggestion made by Jose Fonte.
The former Premier League defender has experience playing alongside both Liverpool and Newcastle United players.
Fonte has recommended that Liverpool consider signing Sven Botman to take over from Virgil van Dijk.
He played with Van Dijk at Southampton and later joined forces with Botman at Lille, where they celebrated a Ligue 1 title.
In a conversation with JeffBet, Jose Fonte shared his thoughts on Virgil van Dijk and Sven Botman:
“I would be thrilled to see Sven Botman step in for Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool, as I believe he possesses the necessary skills.
“We won the league together in France, and like Van Dijk, he is an exceptional player.
“He is tall, excels in duels, plays as a left center-back, enjoys tackling, is aggressive, and is still young.
“My hope is that Sven Botman can maintain his progress after his injury and remain fit.
“If he achieves that, I’m confident Liverpool will take notice of him.”
While I largely agree with his assessment, I have reservations about the idea of Liverpool signing Sven Botman.
When a player is sidelined for an extended period, it’s easy to overlook their previous excellence.
However, during the 2022/23 season, when Newcastle United had the best defensive record in the league, qualified for the Champions League, and reached their first cup final in 24 years, Sven Botman was outstanding.
He is now nearing the end of his recovery and should soon return to full training. Dan Burn has performed admirably, but having Sven Botman back would significantly enhance the team’s prospects for the remainder of the season and beyond.
At nine years younger than Virgil van Dijk, Sven Botman has the potential to be a key player in a high-quality defensive lineup for years to come, alongside talents like Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.
