Ian Wright has expressed concerns regarding a significant issue that Arne Slot must address at Liverpool, specifically pointing to one player in the squad.

Wright contends that Darwin Nunez could be a considerable liability for Liverpool’s ambitions in the Premier League this season.

While players like Luis Diaz and Mo Salah have excelled in their attacking roles, Nunez has struggled, managing only one goal in 307 minutes of play and starting just three matches across all competitions.

The Uruguayan forward, who was signed for an initial fee of £64 million from Benfica in 2022—potentially increasing to £85 million with add-ons—has faced ongoing scrutiny since his arrival in England. Currently, he is viewed by the head coach as a secondary option to Diogo Jota.

Wright’s skepticism about Nunez’s potential was evident during a recent episode of the Wrighty’s House podcast.

He suggested that Liverpool would be strong contenders for the league title if Nunez could find his scoring form, but he now questions whether the 25-year-old will ever evolve beyond being merely an ‘impact player’ for the team.

Wright remarked, “Imagine if Nunez could find consistency in scoring? That’s a hefty price for someone who is not a regular starter.

I see Jota as the primary option; Nunez is more of an impact player, and that’s a significant investment for that role.

“I’ve seen enough of him at this point. I had hoped he would eventually find his rhythm, but it hasn’t happened yet.”

“If he were to hit his stride, Liverpool would undoubtedly be among the top favorites. This situation is a considerable concern.”

Nunez has not yet reached his full potential, but that could soon change.

While we all hope for Nunez to thrive at Liverpool and silence his critics, he has yet to capitalize on the chances provided by Slot this season.

Currently, he ranks as our lowest-scoring forward for the campaign, with the exception of Federico Chiesa, who has had limited playtime since joining from Juventus six weeks ago (Transfermarkt).

Interestingly, the only goal he has scored in the 2024/25 season was a remarkable strike against Bournemouth last month—a finish so impressive that it raises questions about why he doesn’t find the net more often.

Nunez will need to continue competing for a spot in the lineup against Jota, unless the Portugal forward faces a prolonged absence.

However, Slot has indicated that the 25-year-old might benefit from his CONMEBOL ban being lifted, allowing him to represent Uruguay during the current international break.

Perhaps a few goals for his national team will ignite a surge of confidence that he can bring back to Merseyside, ready to unleash on Liverpool’s forthcoming opponents.

As Wright suggests, envision how formidable our attacking line could become if our dynamic number 9 finds his rhythm.
