Fabrizio Romano provides an update on Newcastle United’s transfer plans, indicating they are preparing an ‘official bid’ for Freiburg and Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi, valued at £42 million.

The 20-year-old had a notable season with Freiburg, netting seven goals and providing seven assists in 47 matches, contributing to the team’s seventh-place finish in the Bundesliga and their run to the Europa League final. His strong performance has continued on the international stage, where he has helped Switzerland reach the last-16 of the World Cup.

In the tournament, Manzambi has been instrumental, scoring three goals and assisting two in four matches. Switzerland is set to face Colombia in the knockout stage on Tuesday.

According to Sky Sports News, Freiburg’s valuation of Manzambi could increase due to his impressive World Cup performance and the growing competition for his signature.

When questioned about his future, Manzambi expressed uncertainty, stating, “I honestly don’t know. My contract runs until 2030. We’ll see. Right now, I have to prepare for the World Cup, then we’ll see what the future holds for me.”

Newcastle’s interest in the midfielder is evident, but they must act swiftly due to interest from other clubs, heightened by his World Cup success.

Romano has reported on Newcastle’s efforts, stating, “Newcastle are preparing an official opening bid for Switzerland gem Johan Manzambi to be sent soon. Initial contacts have been made over recent days, and a proposal to SC Freiburg will follow.

“He’s scored three goals and provided two assists in an excellent World Cup campaign so far.”

However, there may be skepticism regarding Newcastle’s pursuit, as they previously appeared close to signing Victor Munoz from Osasuna, only for Liverpool to intervene and secure the deal.
