Xabi Alonso preference ‘clear’ after Chelsea open new manager talks.

Xabi Alonso is ‘waiting’ for a potential U-turn from Liverpool as Chelsea engages in discussions to appoint their next manager. The Spaniard is open to the idea of taking a position at Stamford Bridge but has clearly stated his preference.

Alonso is currently contemplating a return to Liverpool after being identified as a top candidate for the Chelsea managerial role.

According to The i Paper, Alonso is hesitating on accepting the Chelsea position in anticipation of a possible opening at his former club Liverpool at the conclusion of the season.

Although it has been widely reported that Arne Slot will remain as Liverpool’s head coach for the beginning of the 2026-27 season, the report suggests that Alonso is prepared to wait and see if circumstances change.

A return to Anfield is believed to be Alonso’s favored option as he seeks to make a managerial return after his dismissal from Real Madrid earlier this year.

“This professional chapter comes to an end, and it didn’t turn out the way we would have liked,” he expressed on social media. “Coaching Real Madrid has been an honor and a responsibility.

“I thank the club, the players, and above all the fans and Madridismo for their trust and support. I leave with respect, gratitude, and the pride of having done my very best.”

Fulham manager Marco Silva and soon-to-be former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner are among the candidates, while former Chelsea left-back and ex-Flamengo coach Filipe Luis has supporters within the club.

Nevertheless, Alonso and Andoni Iraola – who is confirmed to be departing Bournemouth at the end of the season – are emerging as the top contenders, with the club in discussions with both individuals.

Alonso had a distinguished playing career with Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and the Spanish national team, and it is believed he would earn immediate respect from Chelsea’s young squad.
