Liverpool news: Darwin Nunez ‘set for huge transfer return’ as FSG confirm U-turn
Liverpool is gearing up to face Chelsea in the Premier League this Saturday, aiming for Champions League qualification. Meanwhile, reports of Darwin Nunez’s potential return and an FSG U-turn have surfaced.
As Liverpool prepares to clash with Chelsea, they are focused on securing a spot in the Champions League. However, various off-field developments have captured attention leading up to the match.
Arne Slot has struggled to defend the Premier League title he won in his first season just a year ago, but the chance to participate in Europe’s top club competition for the 2026/27 season provides some hope.
Currently, the Reds sit in fourth place in the league with 58 points from their efforts. Still, a top-five finish is not guaranteed as Liverpool approaches their final three matches against Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Brentford. Here, Daily Star Sport highlights the significant stories…
Darwin Nunez’s return to the Premier League is on the horizon.
Darwin Nunez has announced his exit from Al-Hilal less than a year after joining the Saudi Arabian team.
The Uruguayan striker played for Liverpool from 2022 to 2025 but often struggled to live up to his £64 million transfer fee, according to the Mirror.
As a result, Liverpool opted to minimize their losses and transferred him to the Saudi Pro League for around £46 million last summer. However, Nunez’s time in the Middle East has not been without challenges.
Despite a promising start, he was dropped from the squad following Karim Benzema’s arrival in January, as Al-Hilal aimed to comply with foreign player regulations.
These rules state that only eight foreign players born before 2003 can be included in their 25-man rosters.
Having not played for the club since February, Nunez is reportedly in talks with Al-Hilal that will allow him to leave at the end of the season. He could emerge as a desirable free agent at 26 if his contract ends.
Although a Liverpool comeback appears unlikely, multiple Premier League teams have shown interest in Nunez due to his current situation. It is reported that Newcastle United and Chelsea are monitoring his circumstances.
FSG reverses course after fan protests
Liverpool’s ownership has paused plans to increase ticket prices for the next three seasons in response to a wave of protests from supporters. Recent games at Anfield have featured banners and signs from fans throughout the stadium, along with chants directed at Fenway Sports Group.
Previously, the club had announced plans for fixed ticket price increases through to 2030, which sparked outrage among their supporters. The club had also explained that rising inflation and increased operating costs needed to be addressed, although the backlash from fan groups was significant.
Club officials have since held talks with these fan groups before partially retracting their decision. Rather than raising ticket prices for the next three seasons, the club has opted to increase general admission by three percent next year while freezing prices for the following two years.
Liverpool stated: “The club and Supporters Board will utilize the certainty of these seasons to seek longer-term alternative solutions across the game and explore commercial ideas with the Supporters Board to prevent future ticket price hikes and tackle issues related to affordability and accessibility for future generations.
“LFC believes that, without broader advancements on alternative solutions, future inflationary increases may still be necessary, including for the 2028/29 season, and will continue to engage with its supporters. Both the club and the Supporters Board are dedicated to finding a long-term solution that benefits everyone.
“The club also remains focused on managing its cost challenges responsibly, providing advance notice to supporters and ensuring certainty in its financial planning to stay competitive at the highest levels of football.
In response, the Spirit of Shankly fan group released their own statement, which stated: “We recognize that some fans will continue to feel disappointed about the increase in ticket prices for next season, but we assure you that there will be no increase the following season. We are committed to ongoing discussions with the club and will strive to identify alternative solutions to prevent future price hikes.
“Our matchday culture has also been a priority in recent discussions, and once again, SOS, as a member of the Supporters’ Board, will work diligently to safeguard it. We extend our gratitude to those at LFC who have listened to us and engaged in dialogue; not all club management would have taken the same approach. We look forward to collaborating with them to explore future avenues that benefit everyone involved.
“We also want to express our appreciation for your support, for assisting with distributing leaflets, for protesting, and for ensuring your voices were heard. We could not have achieved this milestone without your involvement.
