Ibrahima Konate has indicated that he is ‘close to an agreement’ regarding a new contract with Liverpool.

The French defender has disclosed that he is now ‘close to an agreement’ for a new deal at Liverpool.

Speculation surrounding his future at Anfield has been rampant over the past few months, especially with his current contract set to expire at the end of June. Just last week, there were mixed reports about the likelihood of an extension.

However, the decisive moment may be approaching as the 26-year-old has publicly addressed his long-term situation on Merseyside.

Konate ‘close’ to finalizing new Liverpool contract

Speaking to the media following Liverpool’s victory over Everton on Sunday, Konate remarked (via Daily Express): “To be honest, there have been many things said, but we have been in discussions with the club for a long time and we are [now] close to an agreement. I believe everyone has hoped for this for quite some time, and we are making good progress.

“There is definitely a strong possibility that I will be here next season. This is what I have always desired. I’m waiting to finalize the contract, but once everything is settled, you will need to ask [sporting director] Richard Hughes what I communicated to him in September and November, and he will provide a response that will calm everyone down.

“Yes [it has taken a while], but this is part of the negotiation process. Last season, with Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah, it was quite similar. I think they finalized their contracts in April, and perhaps this is the way the club prefers to handle it.”

Konate’s announcement brings significant relief after a period of uncertainty

With Konate himself publicly stating that a new deal is nearing agreement, Liverpool supporters can finally feel reassured about the future of the 26-year-old, which had previously seemed quite uncertain.

David Lynch had reported an ‘initial impasse’ in negotiations between the player and the club, but it now appears that the involved parties have navigated through those issues and are on the verge of reaching a mutually agreeable resolution.

The Frenchman has faced harsh criticism regarding his performances this season, some of which have been quite unconvincing. Nevertheless, he continues to be an essential figure in Arne Slot’s team due to his extensive experience and consistent availability during a season plagued by defensive injuries at Anfield.

As Konate accurately noted, it was only around this time last year that Van Dijk and Salah signed new contracts when their respective agreements were nearing expiration. This has become a common occurrence for such situations at Liverpool, often going down to the last minute.

It will be a relief for the France international, the decision-makers at LFC, and the broader fan community that his future appears to be moving towards a resolution that will keep him at the club during his prime years in football. An official announcement seems to be on the horizon.
