Gravenberch critiques Slot’s defensive strategy against PSG

Ryan Gravenberch acknowledged that Liverpool’s unusual back-five formation against Paris Saint-Germain was intended for added security, yet it still subjected them to significant pressure during the 2-0 defeat in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Dutch midfielder stated: “Yes, perhaps to ensure a bit more security at the back. We are aware that their wingers are exceptionally skilled in that area… so maybe a bit more protection was needed. However, overall, even with five at the back, it was challenging today.”

Arne Slot’s defensive strategy restricted PSG to only a two-goal advantage, despite the hosts dominating with 2.35 xG compared to Liverpool’s 0.17. Gravenberch’s remarks indicate that while the system offered some level of protection, it did not effectively neutralize PSG’s attacking threats, especially from their potent wingers.

As the tie heads back to Anfield next week, Slot is expected to shift to a more offensive formation, as Liverpool needs to pursue the game.
