Diogo Jota’s widow shares the poignant final text she sent to the Liverpool star just moments before his tragic accident.

Rute Cardoso, unaware of the crash, intended to send her husband their wedding video when he had a moment to stop.

The 28-year-old footballer lost his life in July of last year after his rented £180,000 Lamborghini Huracan crashed on a Spanish motorway in the early morning hours.

Diogo was driving with his brother Andre Silva to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK, having been advised against flying due to prior lung surgery.

At the time, Spanish authorities indicated that speeding was likely a factor in the accident.

The official biography, authored by former footballer Jose Manuel Delgado, is set to be released on April 9 in Portugal.

Titled ‘Nunca Mais e Muito Tempo,’ which translates to ‘Never Again Is a Long Time,’ the book aims to honor Diogo’s life.

Published by Cultura Editors, the biography is described as a “deeply emotional and respectful work that pays tribute to the life and legacy of Diogo Jota, not only as an elite player but also as a person.”

While discussing the book on Portuguese television, presenter Isabel Figueira remarked: “What struck me most when I read an excerpt was how Rute recounts the last messages she sent him, which Diogo never received.

“She mentions that she had just received the wedding video and says, ‘Love, when you stop, call me, because I have something here to show you,’ referring to the video of their wedding.”

Diogo and Rute were childhood sweethearts, marrying in a church in Porto on June 22 last year, 13 years after they began dating and just 11 days before the tragic accident.

Rute recounted to Jose Manuel how she began calling the hotel near the crash site where Diogo was supposed to stay that night when she grew concerned about his lack of response.

In another passage from the book, as highlighted by the Portuguese magazine Flash, she mentions: “Unlike the majority of players who are drawn to flashy cars, jewelry, and watches, Diogo never engaged in that lifestyle.

“The cars we owned sufficed for him. Perhaps due to his lack of interest in automobiles, he seized the chance to drive a Ferrari, which he actually returned on the morning of our wedding.

“Later on, he would rent the Lamborghini.”

Rute has since relocated back to Gondomar, near Porto in Portugal, with their children.

In the book, the parents of the brothers, Joaquim and Isabel, share poignant stories about how they learned of their two sons’ deaths.

Joaquim recounted: “As I was heading to bed after spending some time in the living room watching TV, I received a call from Rute, who was clearly distressed, saying: ‘Please come here.’

“I instantly felt a sense of dread. The drive to her place was terrible. And the return journey, now aware of the tragedy, was even worse, the most horrific experience imaginable.

“To this day, I still don’t understand how I managed to cope with it.”

Isabel added: “I texted Andre to check on how the trip was going. He didn’t respond; it was 11:23 PM.

“I turned on the TV and dozed off, but not entirely. There was an unsettling feeling, waiting for a reply that never arrived.”

She also describes the moment she found out about her sons’ deaths: “[Joaquim] came to me, placed his hands on my shoulders, and said: ‘It was both of them.’”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez, and Manchester City stars Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva have also contributed to the new official biography.

In a statement shortly after the accident, the Civil Guard in Zamora remarked: “All indications suggest a possible significant excess of speed beyond the legal limit on that section of the motorway.

“All the tests carried out for the moment point to the driver of the crash vehicle being Diogo Jota.

“As a result of the accident, the car caught fire and both occupants died.”

But locals living near the scene of the crash have criticised the state of the road.

The full police report is understood to have been handed in to a Spanish judge probing the accident, but court officials have previously said they will not make its contents public.
