Fabrizio Romano delivers astonishing news about Liverpool this afternoon; it may signal the end for Arne Slot.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Federico Chiesa has withdrawn from Italy’s squad after not passing a fitness assessment.
The Liverpool forward last participated in competitive play for the Italian national team during the summer of 2024 at the Euros.
However, this situation can only be viewed as a serious critique of the current intensity levels in the Reds’ training sessions.
Federico Chiesa’s fitness concerns highlight issues with Liverpool’s training regimen.
Until more information is available regarding whether the Italian is injured, it is difficult to conclude anything other than that Chiesa’s fitness is closely tied to Liverpool’s lackluster training approach.
Fabrizio Romano posted this update on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing that medical evaluations did not clear the 28-year-old for international play due to fitness issues.
🚨❌ Federico Chiesa has exited the Italy squad after medical evaluations confirmed he is unfit to participate.
In agreement with his club, the Liverpool forward has departed the camp, and Bologna striker Cambiaghi will take his place.
The former Juventus player had made a brief appearance for Arne Slot’s team, including a late cameo against Brighton as the Merseysiders sought a result at the Amex over the weekend.
To be fair to the Dutchman and his coaching team, the right-sided winger has had limited competitive play, which may be a significant factor contributing to his fitness problems.
However, how can Federico Chiesa be expected to assist Liverpool in equalizing or securing victories late in matches if he is not fit enough to represent his country?
Arne Slot and his coaching staff must accept responsibility.
We were informed that Slot and his coaching staff’s effective load management would help minimize injuries at Anfield after they took over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2024.
The Reds seemingly gained from increased availability last season. Nonetheless, we are becoming more worried about the claims that Liverpool’s training intensity has diminished.
This is somewhat anticipated, largely due to the hectic fixture schedule. In fact, Arne Slot acknowledged (through the Liverpool Echo) that regarding training after the Galatasaray match: “In terms of training, [we do] nearly nothing.
“Yesterday (Thursday), the players focused on recovery. The priority is recovery; we cannot train in a manner that allows us to learn something beneficial for winning the game on Saturday.
“Our complete focus must be on recovery. The two key elements for that are sleep and nutrition. We ensure they receive adequate sleep, as we went to bed late on Wednesday night.
“Every athlete will tell you that after a match like this, it’s challenging to fall asleep immediately. That’s why we train later on Thursday morning, and we report later today.
“Hopefully, they can manage two days with eight to nine hours of sleep. Then we will check into a hotel tonight to ensure we don’t have to wake up too early tomorrow, allowing for proper rest.
“We strive to do this as effectively as possible. Yesterday, we held a meeting to discuss why we performed well, what we need to do, and to emphasize the importance of recovery. Today, we will likely spend 15-20 minutes on the pitch.”
While this approach is commendable, it does not present a favorable image when someone as seasoned as Virgil van Dijk expresses this after the Brighton match (via the Echo):
“It is the situation. I was also taken aback when I was on the training pitch yesterday (Friday) and noticed the limited number of players present, but that is the reality. So yes, it is challenging.
“Honestly, I’m at a loss for words – I’ve been saying the same thing for months. We cannot build on a solid performance. This is something that must change if we are to reach our goal, which is Champions League football.
“We are making every effort possible. We are working to turn things around and are hopeful about making progress, although it currently seems unlikely. Clearly, we will now return to our respective countries. Each individual has a duty to maintain their fitness and return even stronger, if that is achievable.”
This situation appears to exceed typical load-management standards.
Considering Liverpool urgently needs solutions to address their domestic challenges, it is absurd that the training intensity at the club seems to have diminished.
Are we risking everything on the Champions League? What is the overall strategy if PSG eliminates Liverpool in the quarter-finals (a scenario that is entirely plausible)?
We can discuss mitigating circumstances endlessly, but it feels as though we are not doing enough to address our difficulties on the field.
