Adam Crafton from The Athletic has disclosed that Xabi Alonso is anticipated to be a leading candidate for the Liverpool managerial position if the club opts to dismiss Arne Slot at the conclusion of the season.

The Spaniard, who is still cherished by fans at Anfield from his playing career, is generally thought to be receptive to a return to Merseyside despite his recent tenure at Real Madrid.

In the latest episode of The Athletic FC Podcast, Crafton indicated that the former midfielder would be the obvious choice to usher in a new era.

He remarked: “I imagine he would probably take the job and I’m sure he would be a contender if they chose to let Slot go.”

Xabi Alonso is a leading candidate for the Liverpool position.

The connection to Alonso arises at a moment when his managerial reputation remains strong, despite a difficult five-month period at Real Madrid that concluded briefly in January.

Before his time in Spain, Alonso attained legendary status at Bayer Leverkusen, where he guided the German team to a historic unbeaten domestic double in 2024.

According to various reports, there may already be a verbal agreement in place for Alonso to assume the role on a three-year contract starting in June 2026, contingent on Liverpool’s current season continuing its downward trend.

Many supporters view Alonso as the tactical and emotional successor to Jürgen Klopp, believing his ‘exceptional’ coaching credentials are precisely what a fragmented Liverpool squad requires.

Moreover, the presence of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, two of his standout players from his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, could serve as additional motivation for all parties to facilitate the reunion.

Liverpool may dismiss Slot at the end of the season.

While Arne Slot has gained patience after clinching the Premier League title in his inaugural season, the ongoing season has turned out to be a significant letdown.

Liverpool is presently positioned in sixth place, having suffered nine losses in the league thus far. The recent draw against Tottenham acted as a significant warning, with Dominik Szoboszlai indicating that the club risks missing out on European qualification if they do not enhance their performance.

Additionally, they are set to undertake a vital Champions League rescue mission against Galatasaray tomorrow, following a 1-0 loss in the first leg last week.

Crafton has recognized the challenging nature of the situation, mentioning that Slot has just clinched the league title, which complicates the decision to dismiss him a year later. Nevertheless, he has remarked that a dismissal is ‘very possible’.

Should Liverpool fail to secure Champions League participation for the upcoming season, the management may feel compelled to take decisive action to prevent a prolonged decline.

With Alonso currently unemployed and awaiting an opportunity, the pressure on Slot has reached unprecedented levels.
