Jurgen Klopp has made his expectations for a return quite clear following the snubs from Manchester United and Real Madrid.

The former Liverpool manager has explicitly outlined his conditions for taking on another coaching role while currently being without a managerial position.

The legendary Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has stated that he would not take on a role at a football club that prioritizes commercial interests above all else. The 58-year-old has been away from the touchline since leaving Anfield in 2024.

During his nearly nine-year tenure with the Reds, Klopp etched his name into the club’s history by securing a Premier League title and a Champions League trophy, among other accolades. He voluntarily stepped down almost two years ago.

Since then, he has been frequently linked to a return to coaching and is currently serving as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer. Reports have also surfaced indicating that prior to his appointment at Anfield, clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid had shown interest in him, but to no avail.

While the prospect of the German’s return to coaching remains, he has made it very clear that any club he manages must not overly focus on commercial aspects or allow the management to interfere excessively. This stance may have hindered the previous pursuits by United and Los Blancos.

Reflecting on his decision to join Liverpool in 2018, Klopp remarked: “I love the history. I really am a football romantic. I knew I probably can help. They maybe really need me, in this time. I know what I’m good at.

“When they told me about the problems they had I thought, ‘OK, yeah, I am probably the really right manager for that club’. They took me like I am, they didn’t ask me to do anything else, so I could focus from the first day completely on football.

“It is a football club. A FOOTBALL club. I had talks with other clubs and they didn’t sound like a football club. It sounded like marketing, image, you need to sign this, you need to sign that. And I thought, ‘Wow, that’s not the game I love’.

Just one year later, former Reds striker Robbie Fowler revealed a conversation he had with Klopp, providing insight into alleged interest from Real Madrid and United, as well as his principles.

Fowler stated: “I conducted an interview with him a couple of years back, and he mentioned that he turned down a few extremely wealthy clubs after his time at Dortmund – one of them was certainly Manchester United, and the other was likely Real Madrid.

“He expressed his disdain for their singular focus on commercial interests. He said he appreciated Liverpool for their balance between the financial resources required to succeed and the club’s history and identity, along with their supporters.”

These stipulations are already established for any team that may wish to approach Klopp in the future regarding a managerial role. However, the German has asserted that he will never manage another English club apart from Liverpool.

He stated in 2024: “What I can say for sure – I will never, ever manage a different club in England other than Liverpool, 100 percent. That is not an option. My affection for this club, my respect for the people, is far too great.

“I couldn’t. I couldn’t even entertain the thought for a moment. There’s no possibility. This is a part of my life; we are part of the family, and we feel at home here. There’s no chance of doing that.”
