What Liverpool supporters expressed to Arne Slot right after Gakpo’s goal against West Ham.

Liverpool supporters were heard chanting Arne Slot’s name just before the final whistle.

The travelling Anfield fans made their backing for the Dutch head coach unmistakably clear after Cody Gakpo secured a 2-0 victory over West Ham.

With three points earned, the Merseysiders have moved back into the top half of the Premier League standings, marking their first win since November 1.

Liverpool supporters demonstrate their gratitude for Arne Slot.

BBC Sport’s live coverage of Liverpool’s visit to the London Stadium captured the away fans openly supporting the manager before the full-time whistle.

And rightly so, we might add, after Slot made the rather daring (but welcome) decision to drop Mo Salah from the right flank.

Cody Gakpo shifted from the opposite flank to accommodate Florian Wirtz on the left, while fellow goalscorer Alexander Isak retained his starting position.

Two decisions that were clearly justified by the final score.

No one will be more relieved than Alexander Isak to finally break his Premier League scoring drought with the Reds.

The Swede has faced significant pressure following what was an emotionally charged summer transfer from Newcastle.

Hopefully, scoring his first league goal for his new team will alleviate some of the pressure for both the player and the manager as they prepare for Sunderland next week.

Similarly, Slot is likely to have appreciated what was arguably Florian Wirtz’s finest performance in the iconic red shirt (especially in the first half).

West Ham result secures Slot’s position.

There’s no doubt in our minds that Slot’s job was in jeopardy leading up to the match against Nuno Espirito Santo’s West Ham.

Had the former Feyenoord manager continued a dismal streak of three consecutive defeats with another loss in the capital, it would not have been surprising to see the club contemplate taking serious measures.

To provide some context, a loss would have left Liverpool 11 points adrift of Arsenal, with the Gunners still having a game in hand.

Being potentially 14 points off the top at this point in the 2025/26 season is quite concerning.

However, it is essential that we build on this foundation in the match against Sunderland next week. Nevertheless, this result effectively grants Arne Slot additional time to rescue the season.
