‘He received an injection’ – Arne Slot provides an update on Joe Gomez ahead of Liverpool’s match against PSV

Arne Slot has confirmed that Joe Gomez will be ready for Liverpool’s Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday evening.

Despite right-backs Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong being out due to injuries, the 28-year-old remained an unused substitute during the Reds’ 3-0 loss at home to Nottingham Forest last weekend, with midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai taking his place on the right side of defense.

Aside from two complete appearances in the Carabao Cup, our longest-serving current player has only accumulated 58 minutes of playtime this season, relying on a few substitute appearances (Transfermarkt).

Slot confirms Joe Gomez’s readiness for the PSV match.

Slot spoke to the media on Tuesday afternoon during his pre-match press conference ahead of the PSV encounter tomorrow, where he was questioned about Gomez’s availability for the visit of the Dutch champions.

The LFC head coach responded (via Liverpool Echo): “He is one of the five defenders we have. He had an injection in his knee last week; it’s unusual if you don’t feel anything.

“Besides my decision to start Dom in that position, it’s also related to Joe not being fully fit. He is part of the group tomorrow but wasn’t able to train every single day last week.”

If Gomez doesn’t play now, when will he?

Gomez must privately wonder if he will ever get a proper opportunity under Slot, especially with so many defenders currently injured. Paul Joyce recently raised this very question.

It appears that the head coach was cautious about risking him against Forest due to the knee issue, but at least the 28-year-old has been cleared to play in the PSV match.

Whether he will start is the pressing question as we await the line-ups to be announced 75 minutes before kick-off.

Szoboszlai seems to be more trusted to start at right-back than the Reds’ number 2, even though the latter has significantly more experience in that role throughout his career (104 games compared to the Hungarian’s five).

Although the 25-year-old has demonstrated remarkable adaptability and versatility, we would prefer to see him in his usual attacking midfield position, particularly if Florian Wirtz is unable to play – the German did not participate in training today and appears to be a doubt for tomorrow night.

If Slot chooses to position our number 8 in his traditional role, it would likely allow Gomez to enter the team at right-back, and the Londoner has delivered some impressive performances with the limited playing time he has received this season.

In our opinion, he deserves a spot in the starting XI against PSV, especially given the number of defenders unavailable to the Reds’ manager.
