Why Florian Wirtz’s goal in Fulham vs Liverpool was allowed to stand – despite him being offside…
The reason Florian Wirtz’s goal in the match between Fulham and Liverpool was permitted despite his offside position.
Wirtz was indeed offside, yet VAR allowed the Fulham goal to be valid.
A lesser-known regulation clarifies why, although it seemed at first that Florian Wirtz had been offside when he netted Liverpool’s opening goal during their 2-2 draw against Fulham on Sunday afternoon, his goal was ultimately validated.
The 22-year-old German scored for the second time since his transfer to the reigning Premier League champions for £116 million this summer.
Although goals and assists have been scarce for the two-time Bundesliga Player of the Year, his recent increase in creative contributions is attributed to his persistent effort and resolve.
Observers of his performances have recognized his value to Arne Slot’s midfield, and he has swiftly overtaken Alexis Mac Allister in the hierarchy as he continues to adapt alongside players like Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike.
Nevertheless, his most recent goal seemed to involve a stroke of fortune. On Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher commented: “He appears offside to me. He seems to be positioned further forward.
I understand that angles can sometimes be misleading, but considering we have the penalty spot as a reference, I can hardly believe that was allowed.” Wirtz himself noted, “I was convinced it was offside, so I didn’t even celebrate.”
Lesser-Known Regulation Provided Florian Wirtz with a Favorable Decision
It took three minutes from the moment the flag was raised indicating Wirtz was offside for VAR to employ semi-automated technology and conclude that the goal should be upheld.
This delay alone was sufficient to provoke the frustration of fans, but even more aggravating for those supporting Craven Cottage was that replays still seemed to indicate the German was ahead of the last defender.
Nonetheless, the reason Wirtz’s goal was validated by VAR stems from a little-known tolerance level that has been established in the Premier League since the adoption of semi-automated offsides.
Although manual VAR lines have been eliminated in favor of a semi-automated system, a slight margin for error is still incorporated into the technology. Observe how narrow the margins were below:
In contrast to offside decisions being determined to the millimeter in other competitions like the Champions League, the Premier League’s VAR system functions with a tolerance of up to five centimeters – essentially the width of the green line, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Consequently, Wirtz was granted the goal because his foot was positioned within the green line, placing it within the system’s margin for error.
When the tolerance level was introduced in the 2021/22 season, the referees’ organization Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) projected it could result in an additional 20 goals per season, according to the BBC.
Wirtz Continues To Build Confidence at Liverpool
Wirtz has now played a role in three goals over his last four Premier League matches and, with his intricate movements in and around the penalty area, is beginning to resemble the luxury player his manager envisioned integrating into Liverpool’s system.
As previously mentioned, however, indications of his impact on the team were apparent much earlier than just the hectic winter period.
The German’s tireless pressing, which has occasionally seen him cover more ground than Dominik Szoboszlai, has been a refreshing change in a team that appeared sluggish during the challenging days of October and November.
Even more encouraging, however, is the fact that he is starting to forge connections across the pitch, with his link-up play with Kerkez assisting both players in shedding their reputations as two of the least successful signings of the Premier League season thus far.
Liverpool’s draw over the weekend indicates that they are now unbeaten in nine matches, maintaining a three-point lead over Chelsea in the Champions League qualification positions.
Nevertheless, with four draws in that stretch, there is definitely room for enhancement as they get ready for their upcoming match against league leaders Arsenal on Thursday night.
