Why Declan Rice yelled at Martin Odegaard during a controversial moment for Arsenal.

Martin Odegaard did not distinguish himself positively towards the conclusion of Arsenal’s match against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Declan Rice was enraged with Martin Odegaard after he refrained from engaging in a fifty-fifty challenge in the dying moments of stoppage time.

Emi Buendia propelled Aston Villa to a 2-1 victory over Arsenal at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon, striking the ball past David Raya with the final kick of the match.

Unai Emery’s team walked away with three vital points in the title race, cutting down the Gunners’ lead at the top of the Premier League.

Arsenal could have extended their lead to eight points, but after losing to the Villans and with Manchester City securing a 3-0 win against Sunderland, they now hold only a two-point advantage.

Had Odegaard not avoided a challenge in the closing minutes, Arsenal might have at least secured a draw and provided themselves with some leeway. Just before Buendia curled the ball into the top corner, the Gunners had Aston Villa trapped in their own half.

Ian Maatsen found himself surrounded by three Arsenal players – Noni Madueke, Ben White, and Odegaard – yet he successfully escaped the pressure and recycled possession.

The Gunners’ captain was the first to arrive on the scene and, instead of committing to a tackle, he directed the Aston Villa defender towards his favored left foot.

Odegaard made no effort to contest the ball, which did not sit well with Rice. The Arsenal midfielder was infuriated with his captain, shouting and gesturing wildly before sprinting after the ball.

Rice managed to diffuse the situation, pinning Boubacar Kamara in the midfield. Odegaard also did not cover himself in glory during the goalmouth scramble at the conclusion of the match, either.

Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori put their bodies on the line, yet the Norway international remained inactive. Odegaard observed as Buendia seized the loose ball and scored against Raya from close range.

After the match, Arteta spoke to reporters and refrained from singling anyone out, but he criticized his players for their lackluster performance. The Spaniard remarked: “Naturally, we are very disappointed with how we lost the game.

“However, first and foremost, congratulations to Villa, as they are a very strong team and excel at what they do. We encountered some challenges in the first half, particularly with some unusual turnovers we made after regaining possession, which can be quite perilous against them.

“Aside from the Watkins incident, which was a foul, I can’t recall anything other than the goal. In the second half, we began much better, with a more positive approach, creating opportunities to score.

“I felt we were on track to win the game. We could have lost it earlier, again due to two very risky individual turnovers. But we didn’t.

“We had two scoring opportunities, the last one when the ball went past Declan and we failed to take advantage of it. The next long ball was their second ball, and we cleared it for a throw-in.

“They play quickly, creating a lot of chaos in the box, and they succeeded in placing the ball in the top corner, which reflects the quality of this league. That’s the summary.
