A significant VAR oversight indicates that Southampton’s goal should not have been allowed at Anfield.

A clear oversight by VAR indicates that the goal scored by Southampton at Anfield should have been disallowed.

Liverpool appeared lackluster in the first half against Southampton, and conceding a goal to the relegation-threatened side highlighted a disappointing opening 45 minutes.

This moment, however, seemed to spark a response from the team, but replays indicate that the goal may have been illegitimate.

Mateus Fernandes intervened between Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk during a moment of miscommunication, managing to touch the ball before our goalkeeper could react.

This created an opportunity for Will Smallbone, who then skillfully directed the ball through Alisson’s legs and into the net.

Upon reviewing the footage, it seems that the Portuguese midfielder’s touch inadvertently pushed the ball forward to his teammate, who was in an offside position.

The legitimacy of Southampton’s goal is now in question.

The first half performance prompted a stern response from Arne Slot, with this goal serving as the primary consequence of their lackluster display.

Had the Reds not ultimately secured victory, this incident would likely have drawn much more ire.

A strong second half performance allowed us to regain control of the match, culminating in what Paul Merson described as Mo Salah’s 800th goal of the season, ensuring we left with all three points.

It’s possible that the disparity between our first and second half performances would not have been as pronounced had we not conceded, but it is clear that VAR made a significant error in failing to identify this mistake.
