VAR ERROR :Mark Clattenburg says FIFA could make VAR improvement after error during Liverpool v Crystal Palace…
Mark Clattenburg states that FIFA may enhance VAR following an error in the Liverpool versus Crystal Palace match.
Liverpool suffered due to a refereeing mistake during their loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The Reds had little to argue about regarding their defeat, having been clearly outperformed in a challenging first half.
Nonetheless, there was a compelling case that Crystal Palace’s first goal should not have been allowed.
The ball evidently deflected off Tyrick Mitchell while he was contesting with Conor Bradley near the sideline, yet referee Chris Kavanagh awarded a corner kick to the home team.
Liverpool ought to have managed the subsequent ball into the penalty area more effectively, but they could feel aggrieved as Ismaila Sarr capitalized to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Regrettably, once the referee ruled that a corner was warranted, there was little recourse, as VAR could not intervene. However, as former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has revealed exclusively to Rousing The Kop, this situation may soon change.
FIFA is considering adjustments regarding mistakes in corner kick awards.
In an era where every decision is scrutinized to the finest detail, it is surprising that something as straightforward as incorrectly awarding a dead ball continues to occur.
Unlike penalties and offside calls, this element of the game is entirely objective.
According to Clattenburg, while video assistant referees currently have no recourse, FIFA is pondering a modification to the regulations.
“IFAB and FIFA are exploring ways to enhance VAR and its protocols,” the former official explains.
“At present, VAR cannot intervene in the case of an incorrectly awarded corner. When such a corner results in a goal, it can be quite frustrating.
“FIFA is looking ahead to potentially allowing VAR to rectify decisions regarding goal kicks and corner kicks, but for now, we must accept the referee’s ruling.
Were there any other controversies during the match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace?
While this incident has cost Liverpool a result against Palace, there have been other instances where the Reds have gained from a similar incorrect decision.
Nonetheless, it would undoubtedly benefit the sport if the governing bodies addressed this issue promptly.
Regarding the remainder of Liverpool’s defeat to Palace, it was largely free of refereeing disputes.
Palace believed that Federico Chiesa’s equaliser might have been ruled out, but the replays did not provide a definitive answer on whether Mohamed Salah had handled the ball.
Eddie Nketiah’s late goal was also reviewed by VAR, but the former Arsenal forward was positioned just behind Ryan Gravenberch, thus remaining onside.
