Premier League addresses double VAR penalty incident involving Liverpool at Fulham.

The home team had two penalty appeals reviewed early in the match at Craven Cottage.

The Premier League has clarified the reasons behind Liverpool not conceding a penalty during the early stages of their match against Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

Marco Silva had valid grounds for his frustration on the sidelines after Caoimhin Kelleher escaped a penalty call for Liverpool against Fulham, according to Keith Hackett.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official shared with Football Insider that Liverpool was fortunate to avoid penalties following a “double scenario” of events in their penalty area.

Liverpool entered halftime in a state of shock, trailing 3-1 in West London, a scoreline that seemed fair for Fulham after they were denied a clear penalty in the fifth minute.

Liverpool arrived at Craven Cottage with the opportunity to increase their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 14 points, following Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Everton on Saturday.

Alexis Mac Allister’s brilliant 20-yard goal put Liverpool ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute, setting Arne Slot’s team on track for their 23rd victory of the season and bringing the title within reach.

However, Fulham responded with a goal from Ryan Sessegnon less than ten minutes later, and within another 14 minutes, goals from Alex Iwobi and Rodrigo Muniz flipped the match, giving the hosts a 3-1 advantage.

The Cottagers had two penalty appeals dismissed in the opening minutes after Ibrahima Konate’s error in his own area allowed Andreas Pereira to gain possession.

Pereira first collided with Caoimhin Kelleher while trying to maneuver around the Liverpool goalkeeper, and then Rodrigo Muniz collided with Virgil van Dijk as he attempted to capitalize on the rebound.

Referee Chris Kavanagh determined that neither challenge warranted a penalty, a ruling that was supported by VAR Matthew Donoghue.

The Premier League Match Centre released a statement indicating, “The referee’s decision not to award a penalty to Fulham after Kelleher’s challenge on Pereira was reviewed and validated by VAR, which classified it as a mere coming together rather than a reckless act.

“Additionally, the VAR assessed and found no fault in the incident involving van Dijk and Muniz.”

Liverpool entered the match with an 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League, having remained unbeaten in their last 26 matches in the top division.
