Uncomfortable situation arises as Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk responds to Wayne Rooney’s criticism.

Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, couldn’t help but throw a subtle jab back at pundit Wayne Rooney following some recent remarks that criticized the Dutch defender’s performances.

For many years, Van Dijk has been a standout player for Liverpool, yet he is among several key figures who have faced challenges lately.

The start of the season has not been ideal for the Reds, although they have managed to recover somewhat with two consecutive victories after enduring a dismal stretch of six losses in seven matches.

Rooney recently targeted Van Dijk for criticism during his BBC podcast, and the two were brought together during Amazon Prime Video’s coverage of last night’s match.

What did Virgil van Dijk convey to Wayne Rooney?

After last night’s 1-0 victory against Real Madrid in the Champions League, Van Dijk remarked that some of the criticism directed at him had been excessive.

The Netherlands international was positioned right next to Rooney at that moment, with the pundit seizing the chance to defend his remarks.

Watch below for the somewhat uncomfortable exchange, as Van Dijk also stood his ground, asserting that he believed Rooney’s comments were indeed excessive…

Van Dijk addresses Wayne Rooney’s criticism?

“Certainly, if you lose four or five matches consecutively as a Liverpool player, then it is a valid criticism; that is completely normal in that context,” Van Dijk stated.

“However, I believe it can be excessive at times, but that’s because we exist in a world with numerous platforms where many individuals can voice their opinions, which can be amplified and exaggerated.

“I think it’s beneficial that former players who have competed at the highest level and have experienced tough times also provide perspective.”

Wayne Rooney’s reply to Van Dijk

Rooney then replied: “I believe what I’ve expressed was reasonable when you win the Premier League and then go through a phase where you lose three or four matches consecutively, which is not expected.

“With Virgil as the captain, I believe this is your chance to step up and guide the players, which is what I was referring to. Such situations occur in football, and I think Virgil and the team have responded excellently.”

Additionally, Van Dijk remarked: “If you have been following the matches, I would certainly accept my share of the responsibility. I feel that the remark about me signing my new contract and then it being perceived as me letting things go was somewhat… but that’s just my personal view, and we move forward.”

Van Dijk must be satisfied to have quieted his detractors last night, as he delivered a solid performance that contributed to LFC’s remarkable and crucial victory against one of the top clubs in Europe.
