Sunderland injury update: Latest news on Habib Diarra, Reinildo Mandava, Alese, and the suspension list ahead of the match against Newcastle United.

Sunderland has gained a significant advantage before their upcoming match against Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light next weekend. However, the Black Cats will be without Luke O’Nien next week, as he received a red card in the closing moments of Saturday’s match.

Sunderland faces mixed injury news as a potential starter is ruled out of the Wear-Tyne derby.

REINILDO MANDAVA is expected to be fit to play against Newcastle United in the Wear-Tyne derby next weekend, but Regis Le Bris does not anticipate that Habib Diarra will be available for the regional clash at the Stadium of Light.

Reinildo missed the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City yesterday due to a groin injury sustained before the match, prompting Trai Hume to switch sides and play as left wing-back in his place.

Fortunately, the Mozambique international has not encountered a significant setback, and Le Bris is optimistic that he will have enough time to recover and participate in the game against Newcastle before departing for Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Diarra is another player who may be heading to AFCON, but after being sidelined since September with a more severe groin injury, the midfielder is not expected to take part in Sunday’s derby.

“For Reinildo, it could be okay,” Le Bris stated following his team’s heaviest defeat of the season at the Etihad. “For Habib, it would be too short, I think.”

Arthur Masuaku did not feature in the squad against Manchester City yesterday, but Le Bris clarified that this was a tactical choice rather than due to early AFCON duty.

Masuaku will train on Wearside this week and will be available for the Newcastle match if required.

“Maybe [he will be in the squad against Newcastle], we will see,” Le Bris remarked. “It’s just a question of balance on the bench.

“We made the decision to construct this bench [at Man City] to provide various options. But Arthur is still with us.”

Le Bris made five substitutions during the loss at the Etihad, yet last season’s captain, Dan Neil, remained on the bench throughout the match. Neil has yet to start a Premier League game this season.

“The choice not to include Neil was made as we aimed to remain competitive in the match,” Le Bris stated. “We sought to create an opportunity. The plan was to utilize offensive players on the flanks. Although it didn’t succeed, we made the attempt.”
