Sunderland have been handed a major boost ahead of their clash with Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light on Sunday 14 December.

Yoane Wissa & Sandro Tonali have received an official injury update from Newcastle United, as five players are sidelined – Sunderland looks on, with Sunderland set to play Manchester City on Saturday, followed by hosting Newcastle United next Sunday.

Newcastle United has encountered some disappointing injury news as they prepare for a hectic week ahead.

The Magpies are scheduled to face Burnley on Saturday, followed by away matches against Bayer Leverkusen and Sunderland. The Tyne-Wear derby is just around the corner, and Eddie Howe will be eager to have all his top players available for that match.

However, this may not be the case. While Yoane Wissa is optimistic about participating against Burnley after recovering from a knee injury, one of his teammates is expected to be sidelined for a while.

Sven Botman will miss Newcastle United’s next three matches.

Before the clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night, Eddie Howe confirmed that Sven Botman would be consulting a specialist regarding his back issue.

This back problem is anticipated to keep him out for several games, with Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope offering an update on both the Dutchman and Wissa ahead of Saturday’s match against Burnley.

Hope posted on X: “Wissa is still pushing for a spot in the squad on Saturday, but I’ve been informed that Sven Botman won’t be available. He is looking at a period of absence – including the derby next weekend. A full timescale will be provided after his scan this week.”

This is frustrating for Botman, who had been enjoying a season free of injuries until now. Considering his past knee issues, it was a pleasure to see him consistently playing in black and white again.

Unfortunately, it is now uncertain when he will return to the pitch.

Sven Botman’s injury opens up opportunities for Dan Burn.

With Botman unavailable, it is likely that Dan Burn will take advantage of the situation. He has started Newcastle United’s last three matches as a centre-back, partnering with Malick Thiaw in the last two Premier League games.

The 33-year-old can once again play in his preferred position after having to fill in at left-back during Lewis Hall’s absence.

However, Hall has returned and is performing exceptionally well, creating an opportunity for Burn to move back to centre-back.

This is perfect timing for Burn, as he likely aspires to be included in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup.

Playing at centre-back will enable him to showcase his best abilities, enhancing his chances of being selected to join the Three Lions next summer.
