Not Isak: Liverpool Set to Pursue £100m Star, He Informed Friends of His Wish to Join

According to reports, Liverpool may continue their significant spending this summer with an unexpected move for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, as the club remains interested in the player after failing to secure a deal for him last summer.

Gordon joined the Magpies in January 2023, and despite a slow start in the north-east, he had an exceptional individual season in black and white during the 2023/24 campaign, followed by another impressive season, where he won his first major trophy as a player in the League Cup.

This has attracted the attention of the Reds, and a deal could materialize if negotiations progress in the transfer window.

The Reds may soon require a winger

Football Insider reports that Liverpool is still keen on Gordon after missing out on him last summer and is now strategizing a late summer bid for his services to enhance their attack under Arne Slot.

The England international nearly made a surprising move to Anfield last June, with Newcastle needing to navigate PSR guidelines.

However, their late sales of Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton allowed them to avoid penalties.

Gordon has reportedly told friends that he is ‘very eager’ to return to Merseyside, having previously played for local rivals Everton after progressing through their youth system. With this in mind, the Reds have been ‘closely monitoring’ his progress on Tyneside.

With Newcastle nearing the confirmation of Anthony Elanga’s signing and reportedly considering a move for out-of-form Manchester City star Jack Grealish, they may be inclined to let Gordon go if they receive a sufficiently high offer, especially after successfully retaining Alexander Isak.

With Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy already positioned in their wide ranks, the presence of a five-member group of wingers might make Eddie Howe more inclined to consider selling Gordon if an irresistible offer comes in, even though he is regarded as the standout player in his winger lineup.

However, that offer would need to be an astonishing £100 million.

Nevertheless, Gordon remains receptive to a transfer to Liverpool, despite having signed a new contract in October, and a potential sale of Luis Diaz could further stimulate that offer.
