Report: Liverpool are becoming increasingly ‘confident’ about finalizing a contract deal for centre-back.

Liverpool is currently dealing with contract uncertainty regarding Ibrahima Konate.

The 26-year-old centre-back’s contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the current season, and if an agreement is not reached, he will depart for free in the summer of 2026.

This would undoubtedly be a significant setback for the Reds, who have invested considerable time and resources into Konate since his £35m transfer from RB Leipzig in 2021.

Last season, the Frenchman solidified his status as one of the top central defenders, excelling in the core of the Reds’ defense as Virgil van Dijk’s favored partner.

Liverpool given fresh hopes for Konate

Liverpool clinched the Premier League title under Arne Slot, with Konate’s stature and reputation on the rise. However, his impressive performances have attracted the attention of Real Madrid.

Consequently, the Bernabeu club is reportedly preparing a free transfer bid for the defender. Starting in January, Konate will be eligible to discuss a Bosman deal with any foreign clubs, and it is well-known that Madrid has him on their radar.

Nevertheless, Liverpool has recently received renewed optimism regarding securing a contract extension for Konate, thanks to a report from Spanish media.

Madrid believes Liverpool is optimistic about the Konate deal

Defensa Central reports that Liverpool is now “confident” about reaching an agreement with Konate for a new contract.

The report acknowledges that Konate remains a target for Madrid but also highlights the 15-time European champions’ interest in Nottingham Forest’s Murillo.

Thus, the Spanish media may be setting the stage for disappointment regarding the Konate deal as they are compelled to seek alternative options for defensive reinforcements.

Liverpool is working on a renewal

“The preferred and most realistic option is Ibrahima Konaté,” the report states.

“However, this situation could change rapidly, as there are only three months remaining before the player can negotiate directly with any club and potentially sign his next contract.

Consequently, both parties have the opportunity to reflect and arrive at a conclusive decision.

“In the meantime, Liverpool is actively working to extend their player’s contract and remains optimistic about its success, even though they are aware of Real Madrid’s interest.”

Retaining Konate would be an ideal outcome.

Konate is reportedly earning £140k per week on Merseyside, with suggestions that he would require approximately £200k per week for a renewal.

In many respects, Konate’s retention symbolizes the perfect resolution for Hughes and Slot; a top-tier talent who is intimately familiar with the club.

Let’s hope the club achieves success in the forthcoming negotiations.
